Power hours: how XAUUSD and EURUSD differ

"Trade the most active hours" is common advice. The active hours for gold and EURUSD overlap but are not the same.
EURUSD usually has two main windows:
- 07:00–10:00 UK, the London open and the first European data.
- 13:00–16:00 UK, the NY open and US data.
The middle of the day is often quiet.
XAUUSD looks different:
- Asia has more activity than EURUSD, with Chinese and Indian demand flows.
- The London open matters, but gold often waits for 08:30–09:00 UK to choose direction.
- 13:30–15:00 UK is frequently gold's most violent window, driven by US data and yields.
- The 15:00 UK London gold price auction (and the 16:00 FX fix for the dollar) can create late moves.
A practical way to find your own power hours: pull the average 15-minute range for each pair by hour over the last 60 trading days, then divide by typical spread at that hour. The hours where the ratio is highest are where your cost-adjusted opportunity is largest.
Have you measured this for your pairs? Did any hour surprise you?
