NYSE cash open and USDJPY: does the equity move lead the yen?

At 14:30 UK (13:30 during the few weeks when the DST shifts don't line up), US cash equities open. USDJPY often reacts in the first few minutes, and the direction is usually tied to risk sentiment: stocks up, yen weaker; stocks down, yen stronger.

The question for a scalper is whether that link is usable on a one-minute chart or just a story we tell after the fact.

Observations worth testing on your own data:

- On days without US data at 13:30, the first 5 minutes of the S&P cash session and USDJPY often move the same way. The relationship weakens after 15–20 minutes.
- On days with data at 13:30, the open is already contaminated. The equity move is a reaction to the same print.
- Strong yields moves overpower everything. If the 10-year is moving hard, USDJPY tracks yields, not stocks.

A simple test: record the direction of ES futures and USDJPY over 14:30–14:35 for 40 sessions. Count agreements. If you get 26+ out of 40, there is something to look at. If it is near 20, it's coin-flipping.

Has anyone done this properly with tick data? Curious whether the lead goes stocks → yen or the other way around.
