Linking charts by symbol in a multi chart layout

If you run several charts at once, say M1, M5 and M15 of the same pair, changing the symbol on all of them every time you switch pairs gets old fast. Linking charts by symbol solves it, and most platforms support it in some form.

TradingView has it built in for multi chart layouts. In the layout menu, turn on sync for symbol, and changing the symbol on one chart changes it on all of them. You can also sync the crosshair, the time and the interval separately. Syncing crosshair and time is especially handy, because moving over a bar on M1 highlights the same moment on M5.

cTrader has linked charts too, using colour groups. Charts in the same colour group switch symbol together, so you can have two groups for two pairs.

MT5 doesn't have this natively. There are free scripts and indicators that add symbol syncing between charts, and some trade panels include it. It's a bit fiddly to set up but works.

Why it matters for scalpers. Less clicking means fewer mistakes, like reading the M15 of one pair while the M1 shows another. That mistake is more common than people admit, especially when switching quickly between correlated pairs.

It also makes reviewing faster, because you can step through a trade on several timeframes at once.

Be careful with linked charts and one click trading. If all charts switch to the new symbol, a one click button on any of them now trades the new symbol. That's usually what you want, but in a fast moment it's easy to click on the chart you were just looking at, thinking it's still the old pair. Keeping the order panel on only one chart, or using a separate trade window, reduces the chance of trading the wrong symbol by accident. Some traders also colour the background of the trading chart differently so it stands out from the rest of the layout.

Linking by time is useful even without linking by symbol. Having EURUSD and GBPUSD side by side with time sync means that hovering over a bar on one shows the same moment on the other. That's a quick way to compare reactions to the same news or session open without lining up the charts by hand. On TradingView this works across different symbols in the same layout and costs nothing. It's especially useful for spotting which of two related pairs moved first after a headline, since the time line runs through both charts at once. That can tell you which one to trade on the next push.

Drawings don't always follow the link. On some platforms, levels you draw on M5 show up on M1 of the same symbol, and on others they don't. TradingView syncs drawings across charts of the same symbol in a layout if you enable it. MT5 keeps drawings per chart window by default, so a level drawn on M5 won't appear on M1 unless you copy it or use a template. Know how yours behaves before relying on levels being visible everywhere. Saving levels into a template that loads on every timeframe is the usual workaround.

For multi monitor setups, think about which screen holds which group. A common layout is the entry timeframe large in the middle, higher timeframes on the side, and correlated pairs on another screen with their own link group. That keeps your eyes moving in a predictable pattern. Whatever layout you pick, save it as a workspace or profile so it loads the same way every day and you don't spend the first ten minutes of the session rebuilding it. MT5 calls these profiles, TradingView calls them layouts, and both save in a couple of clicks.

Saving my MT5 profile stopped me rebuilding it every morning, proper time saver tbh.

Mouse-driven order entry is slow and error-prone under pressure. Keyboard shortcuts fix a lot of that, but the setup has quirks that get overlooked.

- Keyboard layout changes what a shortcut means. A key combination set up on one layout can land on a different physical key after switching language input. Anyone who flips between layouts should test shortcuts after each switch.

- Focus decides everything. A hotkey only works if the right window has focus. A chart that is not selected, or a dialog box sitting behind the platform, can swallow the keystroke while the trader assumes it went through.

- Modifier keys help avoid accidents. Using a combination such as control plus a letter for entries, while keeping close-all on a harder combination, lowers the risk of hitting the wrong key in a hurry.

- Different platforms handle hotkeys differently. Some allow custom assignments for buy, sell, and close, others only offer fixed ones, and some rely on scripts to add them. Checking what the platform really supports beats assuming.

- Remote desktop adds a layer. Over a VPS connection, keystrokes can be delayed or captured by the local machine first, particularly with system-level combinations.

- Sticky keys and auto-repeat settings can turn one press into two. That ties directly back to accidental double orders.

Testing the whole set on a demo account, with the same connection used for live trading, is the surest way to find the odd ones.

What hotkey setup do you use for entries and exits, and has anything about layout or focus ever made a key press miss?
