Asia range fades on USDJPY: when they work and when they fail

USDJPY in Asia often trades a defined range, and fading the edges is a popular approach. Results vary hugely depending on the day.

Days when it tends to work:
- No Japanese data or official comments scheduled.
- US session the previous evening was calm.
- The range is at least 15–20 pips wide, giving room for both target and stop.
- Price touches the edge and stalls rather than slicing through.

Days when it tends to fail:
- Japanese finance ministry commentary about yen weakness, or rumours of intervention.
- BoJ meetings or minutes.
- Big moves in US yields overnight that keep pushing the pair.
- Gotobi days (5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th of the month), when exporter and importer flows around the Tokyo fix at 09:55 Tokyo time (00:55 UK in winter, 01:55 in summer) can push the pair in one direction.

Practical setup: wait for two touches of the edge. Enter on the second touch if it fails to break, stop 5–8 pips beyond the edge, target the range midpoint.

The intervention risk is the elephant in the room. A single comment can move USDJPY 100+ pips. Range fades with tight stops can survive that; positions without stops cannot.
