What's on your gold workspace?

Ask five brokers for EUR/USD at the same instant and there will be five answers, all slightly different. So which one is right?

Maybe the exchange price? There is none. Unlike a stock listed on one exchange, spot FX trades over the counter, between banks, dealers and platforms, with no single tape recording every transaction. Each platform publishes its own prices, and they are all valid views of the same market.

Maybe the interbank rate then? That is not one rate either. Different venues show different levels, and the bank-to-bank market is not open to retail anyway. What retail sees is a derived feed, a blend of providers with a markup.

Maybe the benchmark fix? There are daily fixing rates that serve as reference points, and they matter for some flows, but they are a snapshot at a set time, not a live price, and they are not what a scalping trade fills against.

So the working answer is that the price is whatever an executable quote on a particular platform says it is, at that moment. Backtests built on one broker's history describe that broker's world, not the market.

That has odd consequences. A level that looks like precise support on one chart may sit a few tenths of a pip away on another. Disputes about whether a stop was hit by a real price are harder to settle when there is no neutral record. And comparing results between traders only makes sense when the feed and the costs are known.

One way to cope is to treat levels as zones rather than lines, and to compare any claim about a spike against at least two sources.
