Margin on XAUUSD micro lots: avoiding a surprise margin call

Gold margin requirements are higher than majors at most brokers, and they can change without much notice during volatile periods. Micro lots feel safe, but several small positions add up.
How margin works on gold: if a broker offers 1:100 leverage on gold with a 100 oz contract and gold is at $2,000, one lot needs $2,000 margin. At $4,000 gold, the same lot needs $4,000. Margin scales with price, and gold's price level has risen significantly in recent years.
Common traps:
- Brokers raising margin requirements before major events or during extreme volatility, sometimes to 1:20 or less.
- Several micro positions open at once, each small, but together using a large share of free margin.
- Prop accounts with different leverage on metals than the trader assumed.
Simple safeguards:
1. Calculate margin per 0.01 lot at today's price, not last year's.
2. Keep free margin at least 3x the margin used for any gold position.
3. Check the broker's notices before FOMC and NFP for temporary changes.
Have you been surprised by a gold margin change? Which event triggered it?
