The 9:30 New York stock open and USD pairs in the half hour after
Most FX traders plan around the 8:30 New York data and then treat everything after that as one block. I think the US cash equity open at 9:30 deserves its own spot in the session plan.
At 9:30 stock trading opens properly and a lot of the day's risk positioning starts showing up at once. If equities open with a big gap and keep going in that direction, pairs that follow risk sentiment, AUDUSD and USDJPY especially, often move with them. If the equity open reverses the overnight futures move, FX can reverse too, sometimes undoing whatever the 8:30 release started.
The 10:00 slot adds to it. Several US releases come out at 10, and there's the 10am New York option cut. So the window from 9:30 to around 10:15 can easily be busier than the data at 8:30.
For the floor, here's how I'd set it up. Note where index futures are trading before the open and whether the 8:30 data pushed them. Mark the FX levels that the 8:30 move created. Then at 9:30 watch whether stocks continue or reverse, and whether your pair goes with them or ignores them.
If a pair ignores a strong equity move, that's information too. It usually means something pair specific is driving it, and the risk link is weak today.
