Dormant account fees: the cost of taking a break
A lot of brokers charge an inactivity or dormant account fee if you don't trade for a certain period. It might be a monthly fee after three, six or twelve months of no trading. It's usually small, but it can quietly drain a balance you've forgotten about.
The rules vary. Some brokers count any trade as activity, others need a trade or a deposit. Some charge only if the balance is above a threshold, others charge regardless. Some stop charging once the balance hits zero, which means a forgotten account can end up empty.
This matters if you take a long break from trading, or if you have accounts at several brokers and use some only occasionally.
What I do: check the fee schedule for each broker I have an account with, note the inactivity period and fee, and set a calendar reminder before it would apply. If I don't plan to use an account, I withdraw the balance and close it rather than leaving money sitting there.
It's not a big deal in money terms usually. It's more about not losing small amounts to something easy to avoid.
Some brokers don't charge inactivity fees at all, which matters when choosing one if you trade irregularly.
