The Monday after payrolls: digesting Friday's move
Non-farm payrolls gets all the attention on Friday. The Monday after is less discussed, but it often has its own character.
If Friday's reaction was big, a lot of positions were opened or closed into the weekend on that move. On Monday, the market has had time to think, read the details, and listen to any weekend commentary. Sometimes that leads to continuation, when the data really changed the outlook. Sometimes it leads to a partial retrace, as people who reacted to the headline take a second look at revisions or wage growth.
What I look at on Monday is where price is relative to Friday's post-release range. If Asia and early London hold near the Friday close, the move is being accepted. If price starts drifting back into the middle of Friday's release candle, the reaction was probably overdone.
Monday is also often light on US data, so there's less to push the dollar either way. That can mean the Friday move just sits there, and setups that need movement don't work well.
I don't have a fixed rule. It's more that I don't assume Friday's direction carries over automatically. I wait for London to show how it's treating Friday before trading the dollar pairs.
