Reading a prop firm's terms-change email properly
Prop firms change their rules fairly often. New restrictions, different payout schedules, changes to drawdown calculations, new platform providers. Usually it arrives as an email with a friendly subject line, and most people skim it.
The problem is that some changes apply to existing accounts, not just new ones. A change to how the daily loss limit is calculated, or a new restriction on news trading, can affect an account you're already trading, sometimes from a date only a few days away.
What I look for in these emails: does it apply to existing accounts or only new purchases? What's the effective date? Does it change the drawdown or daily loss calculation? Does it add any new restricted behaviour? Does it change payout timing or conditions?
If anything affects how I trade, I write it in my trading plan straight away, with the date. Then I check the firm's rules page to confirm it matches the email, since sometimes the details differ.
If it's unclear whether a change applies to my account, I ask support and keep the answer.
This takes ten minutes, and it's a lot better than breaking a new rule you didn't know existed.
