A maximum trade count per session, and what to actually do when you hit it
A lot of people set a maximum number of trades per session or day. It's a good rule. It caps overtrading, limits the damage on a bad day, and forces you to be selective. What's discussed less is what to do once you hit it.
The obvious answer is stop trading. But the hard part is that hitting the limit often happens at a moment when you feel like the market is finally doing something, or when you're down and want to make it back. That's exactly when the rule matters.
What helps is having a concrete action ready. When I hit the limit, I close the trading platform, not just minimise it. Then I write a short note in the journal on how the session went and what the trades had in common. If there's a good setup later, I take a screenshot and log it as a missed trade, which lets me check later whether the limit is costing me anything.
On the number itself: base it on your normal session. If you usually take three or four trades, a limit of five or six gives room without letting a bad session spiral.
Review every few weeks whether the limit is too tight or too loose, using the missed trade log rather than feelings.
