Tick charts vs time charts for M1 scalping

Time charts print a new candle every fixed interval, like one minute. Tick charts print a new candle after a fixed number of price updates, for example every 100 ticks. Some scalpers switch to tick charts and swear by them, so I've been thinking about when they actually help.

The main difference is how they handle activity. On a time chart, a quiet minute and a frantic minute each get one candle. On a tick chart, a quiet period might produce one candle in five minutes, while a burst produces several candles in a minute. That spreads out the busy moments and compresses the dead ones, which can make structure clearer during fast moves.

The catch with FX is that tick data from your broker is just their price updates, not actual traded volume. Different brokers send different numbers of updates, so a 100 tick chart on one broker isn't the same as on another. And tick data is often not available far back, which limits backtesting.

Indicators also behave differently. A 20 period moving average on a tick chart covers a variable amount of time, which can be good or bad.

I think tick charts can help with execution timing during busy windows, but I'd keep time charts for the context and levels, since those are what most participants see.

Does anyone use them for anything other than entries?
