NZD on Global Dairy Trade auction nights
Dairy is New Zealand's biggest export, so the Global Dairy Trade auction every couple of weeks gets more attention in NZD than you'd expect if you mostly trade the majors. Results land late in the European afternoon, early morning in New Zealand.
Most of the time the reaction is small. A few pips, gone in ten minutes. Sometimes though, a big price index move lines up with a thin market and NZDUSD jumps far more than the number deserves.
I don't trade the print. Too thin, and I don't have an edge reading dairy prices. What I do is check the calendar so I'm not sitting in a tight NZD scalp when it drops. Sounds obvious, but it's easy to forget when you don't trade NZD every day.
AUDNZD is the one people forget. A dairy surprise moves the NZD side alone, and the cross can jump out of a range that otherwise looked dead quiet.
If you trade NZD pairs in the US afternoon, put the auction dates in the calendar. It takes a minute, and I'd honestly rather skip one window than eat a spike I didn't know was coming.
