Measuring slippage does not need special software. A simple spreadsheet built from your trade history shows a lot.

Columns:
  • Time (server and local).
  • Symbol and direction.
  • Order type (market, stop, limit).
  • Requested price (from your order or the stop level).
  • Filled price.
  • Slippage in pips: positive if better than requested, negative if worse.
Analysis:
  • Average slippage by hour of the day.
  • Average slippage by order type: stops typically slip more than market orders.
  • Distribution: share of positive, zero and negative fills.
  • Slippage on news minutes vs normal minutes.
MT5 shows the requested price in the order history for some order types; for others, recording it at entry is necessary.

Have you built a slippage log, and which hour showed the worst results?

I built the slippage sheet from MT5 history with requested price, fill, hour, and order type. Stops at the London open averaged about 0.4 pips worse than market orders on EURUSD across a 300 trade block.

The hourly view changed my schedule more than any blog post. 08:00 to 08:20 and the first minute after US data were the clear losers; mid morning fills were close to zero slip.

The illustration shows average requested versus filled slip by London hour for my last sample. Bars above the zero line are adverse fill; the open spike is why I cut size in the first twenty minutes.

Limit orders trimmed some entry cost yet left stop fills untouched. I still widen the stop budget on news minutes rather than pretending the sheet will stay flat.

Which hour was worst in your log? Mine is still the London open by a wide margin, so I treat that window as a separate cost regime.
