Pip Value in a Non-USD Account: Converting Risk Correctly

If your account is in EUR, GBP, CZK or another currency, pip values change with exchange rates. Using USD pip values directly leads to wrong risk calculations.

Example: EUR account trading EURUSD, 1 lot.
  • Pip value in USD = $10.
  • Converted to EUR at EURUSD 1.10 = about €9.09.
For crosses, the conversion is from the quote currency to the account currency. GBPJPY in a EUR account: the pip value is in JPY and must be converted to EUR at the current EURJPY rate.

Practical tips:
  • Use a position-size calculator that reads the account currency and current rates.
  • Recalculate when exchange rates move significantly.
  • Remember that open profits and losses in other currencies change value as rates move.
Which account currency do you use, and has conversion ever affected your risk calculations?

My account is in EUR, so every USD pip value gets converted before I size. On EURUSD that is straightforward, but on GBPJPY I have been wrong by a noticeable fraction when I reused an old EURJPY rate from the morning while the cross had moved a hundred points.

I keep a small calculator sheet that pulls account currency, pair, and lots, then outputs risk in euros. Recalculating when EURUSD moves more than a figure has avoided undersizing into a volatile week.

Open P and L marked in a foreign currency is the sneaky part. A floating USD profit can shrink in euro terms while the price path still looks fine, which once made me hold a winner too long waiting for a money target that rates had already eroded.

I disagree with using USD pip values as a rough proxy and adjusting later. The adjustment step is exactly what gets skipped mid session.

Has conversion ever pushed you to change account currency entirely? I have thought about a USD base just to simplify, then remembered the tax reporting on my side prefers euro.
