EURGBP After Dual Data Days: When Both UK and Eurozone Print the Same Morning

Post by FXS Prop Desk »

EURGBP is usually quiet, but mornings with releases from both the UK and the Eurozone can produce unusually large moves relative to its normal range.

Typical dual-data mornings:
  • UK CPI at 07:00 and Eurozone flash CPI or German state CPIs later the same morning.
  • UK and Eurozone PMIs within the same hour.
  • Overlapping central bank speakers.
What to watch:
  • The two releases can push in the same direction (e.g. strong UK, weak Eurozone) and produce a trend day in a normally ranging pair.
  • Or they can cancel out, leaving a whipsaw.
  • Spreads in EURGBP widen more than in GBPUSD around releases.
Using the normal daily ATR of EURGBP as a reference helps judge whether a move is already stretched: on dual-data days, moves of 1.5× ATR are possible, but rarely more.

Does anyone trade EURGBP specifically on days with both UK and Eurozone data?

I do trade it on those mornings, but mostly as a readout of the two legs. If EURUSD is up 0.2 percent while GBPUSD is down 0.2 percent, the cross has to move roughly 0.4 percent, and both legs agreeing is what makes me trust a trend day.

When only one leg moves, the cross tends to drift back. A UK CPI miss that knocks cable while EURUSD sits flat often gets half retraced in EURGBP once the euro data lands at 09:00 London.

The 1.5 times ATR guide matches my notes. With daily ATR lately in the 30 to 40 pip area, I stop looking for continuation once the cross is 45 pips off the open.

Spreads are the real cost. At 07:00 I have seen 2 to 3 pips in EURGBP while GBPUSD was under 1, so I let the first 15 minutes pass even when the print is clean.

One detail that changes sizing: a EURGBP pip is paid in pounds, so per lot it is worth roughly a third more than a EURUSD pip at current cable levels. I cut the lot size to match rather than keeping the same number of lots.
