When a Prop Firm Changes Its Broker Partner: What Moves and What Breaks

Prop firms usually run accounts through a partner broker or technology provider. When that partner changes — for regulatory, technical or commercial reasons — traders can face a migration at short notice.

What typically changes:
  • Server name and login details, sometimes the platform itself.
  • Symbol names and contract specifications, e.g. a different contract size for indices or gold.
  • Spreads, commissions and swap rates.
  • Server time, which shifts the daily reset and candle closes.
What can break:
  • EAs and templates that rely on exact symbol names.
  • Position-size calculators set up for the old contract sizes.
  • Open positions, if the firm requires them to be closed before migration.
A checklist for the first day on the new server: verify symbol specifications, check the daily reset time, place one minimum-size test trade, and recalculate lot sizes for each instrument you trade.

Has your prop firm ever migrated accounts, and what caused the most trouble?

The one that hurt me was quieter than any of the breaks listed. The new server added a suffix to every symbol, my EA found no match, and instead of throwing an error it simply sat there for two sessions without opening anything.

Since then my first check after any migration is a log line at start up that prints the exact symbol name the code resolved. If that line is missing or blank, nothing runs until I fix it.

Contract size on indices deserves its own warning. On one move the index point value went up tenfold under an unchanged symbol name, so a calculator left on old settings would have put on ten times the intended risk.

Before the switch I also screenshot the account metrics page, including trading days counted, best day share and the current drawdown floor. Progress figures have a habit of being recalculated after a migration, and a dated screenshot settles arguments quickly.

Did your firm move the daily reset time when it changed partner? That one is easy to miss until a trade opened late in the evening lands in the wrong day.

FXS Prop Desk, one break missing from the list is trade history. On the move I went through, closed trades stayed on the old server, and my EA built its daily loss counter from today's closed deals, so on the first morning it believed I had lost nothing while the dashboard said otherwise.

Anything that reads account history needs a manual starting value after a migration. I now keep the daily and weekly counters in a small file I can edit by hand, rather than rebuilding them from deals.

Digits on gold changed on me too. The old feed quoted two decimals and the new one three, so a stop written as 300 points went from 3 dollars to 30 cents, and the first test order would have been stopped out by the spread alone.

The swap schedule is worth a look as well. The new partner charged the triple roll on Friday for indices instead of Wednesday, which matters for anyone carrying an index position overnight.

Did the firm send the new spec sheets before the switch, or only once you could log in? Having them a week early is the difference between a calm migration and a weekend of edits.
