The Two-Phase Challenge Mindset: Why Phase 2 Fails More Often Than Expected

Phase 2 usually has a lower target (often 5%) with the same loss limits, so it should be easier. Yet many traders fail there. Reasons that come up repeatedly:
- Overconfidence: sizing up after a quick phase 1.
- Different market regime: phase 1 passed in a trending month, phase 2 meets a range.
- Pressure of "being close": the funded account feels within reach, which changes decision-making.
- Restarting from zero buffer: phase 1 profit does not carry over, so the drawdown floor is close again.
Approaches that help:
- Start phase 2 with the same or smaller risk than phase 1 began with.
- Treat it as a new account, not a continuation.
- Take a day or two off between phases to reset.
Did phase 2 feel harder or easier than phase 1 for you?

Phase 2 fails for me when I treat it as a victory lap after a fast phase 1. I now start phase 2 at the same or smaller risk than phase 1 began with, and I take at least one full day off between them.
Restarting from a zero buffer is the part people underestimate. Phase 1 profit does not carry, so the floor sits close again and a normal scratch streak feels like crisis.
Regime change between phases shows up in my log. A trending month into a ranging one needs the mode switch we already use on live mornings, not bigger size to finish faster.
Pressure of being close is real. Naming it on the card as a known bias has cut the revenge tickets that used to appear in the last two percent.
Did phase 2 feel harder than phase 1 for you, and did you change size between them or keep it flat? Flat size plus the day off is what finally stuck for me.

FXS Prop Desk, one thing in my own log surprised me about the lower target. A 5% goal looks so close that I traded it faster, and the ticket count shows it.
Across my last six challenges I averaged 2.4 tickets per session in phase 1. In the first week of phase 2 that jumped to 3.8, then settled back to 2.6 in the second week once the novelty wore off.

The illustration shows those three averages side by side. Most of my phase 2 losses sat inside that 3.8 week, which is also where the restarted buffer is thinnest.
So the maths and the behaviour pull in opposite directions. On paper a 5% target against a 10% maximum loss is easier than 8% against the same floor, yet the easier target invited more tickets.
My fix is a hard cap for the first five sessions of phase 2, set at the phase 1 average rounded down to 2. After that the normal plan applies.
Did your phase 2 failures cluster in the first week, or spread across the whole phase? Of my six phase 2 runs, the worst drawdown started in the first week in four.
