Negative Balance Protection: How It Works

Negative balance protection means a client cannot lose more than the money in their account. If a gap or extreme move pushes the balance below zero, the broker absorbs the difference.

When it matters:
  • Extreme events such as the 2015 SNB decision, when EURCHF dropped sharply in minutes and a number of client balances ended far below zero.
  • Weekend gaps after unexpected news.
  • Very high leverage on illiquid instruments.
Where it applies:
  • Mandatory for retail clients under EU and UK rules.
  • Often not guaranteed for professional clients.
  • Offshore brokers may or may not offer it; the terms decide.
Practical advice: check the client agreement, not the website banner, for the exact wording.

Does your broker offer negative balance protection, and have you checked the terms?

FXS Prop Desk, one detail worth looking for in the agreement is whether the protection works per account or across everything you hold with that broker. Some terms allow a negative balance on one account to be offset against a positive one, so a spare account holding 3,000 could be reduced after a gap on the main one.

It is also worth remembering what the protection does not do. It stops the balance going below zero, but the whole account can still be wiped out, so the real control is position size before a weekend or a central bank meeting.

The professional client route catches people. Opting up for higher leverage often removes the protection entirely, and the box is usually a single tick during onboarding.

For prop traders the question looks different, since the firm carries the account risk. Still, a few firms state that a breach caused by a gap ends the account with no refund, which is its own kind of limit.

My own broker offers it on the retail entity and I read the wording last year. Has anyone actually seen it applied after a gap, and how long did the reset take?
