Choosing a Prop Firm: A Checklist Beyond Price and Profit Split

Price and split get the attention, but a few less visible factors usually decide whether an account works for a scalper:
  1. Execution model: which liquidity provider or broker, typical spreads at the session open, commission per lot.
  2. Server location: relevant if you trade short timeframes from Europe vs the US.
  3. Platform choice: MT4/MT5, cTrader, DXtrade, Match-Trader — and whether your tools run there.
  4. Rule clarity: are drawdown calculation, news rules and hold times written precisely?
  5. Payout history: verifiable payouts, average processing time.
  6. Support response: test it before buying. Ask a specific rule question.
  7. Company basics: jurisdiction, how long it has operated, terms on account termination.
A practical test: open a free trial and record spreads on your main pair at the exact times you trade.

What is the one factor that made you leave a prop firm, if you have?

The factor that made me leave one firm was drawdown wording that only made sense after I'd paid. Equity or balance, trailing or static, and whether the day starts at midnight server time were buried in a FAQ rather than the main rules page.

Before I buy now I send support one specific question, something like how the daily loss counts an overnight swap on a held position. If the reply takes more than a day or dodges the detail, that is already an answer.

The free trial spread log at my open times is the other filter. I want the median and the 90th percentile on EURUSD between 08:00 and 09:00 London, not a quiet afternoon screenshot from the sales page.

Server location mattered more than I expected once I started measuring. A US hosted book added enough delay on my London entries that the same setup on a London server filled cleaner, even when the stated spread looked similar.

Payout history I treat as necessary but not enough. Verifiable payouts with slow processing still left me waiting through a month I needed the capital elsewhere.

The support test has filtered more firms for me than the fee table. Have you ever walked away after that test and before paying?

FXS Prop Desk, news rule clarity is the checklist item that ends more trials for me than payout speed. I want the blackout written in minutes around named releases, not a vague no news trading line that support interprets three ways.

Hold overnight and weekend rules sit beside that. One firm allowed overnight on the evaluation and banned it on funded without a clear migration note, which would have broken my Monday gap habit on day one.

Termination after a payout request is the ugly clause I now search for before paying. A firm that can freeze the account while a withdrawal is pending turns a green month into a negotiation, and I have walked away from that wording twice.

Platform tooling comes next. If my size script or hotkey panel is banned as third party software, the trial is over even when spreads look fine, because I will not relearn fills under pressure.

Company age and jurisdiction stay on the list, but they rarely decide alone. A clear rule book with average support beats a famous name with a FAQ that contradicts the contract.

Have you had a firm change news rules mid-challenge? That is another leave factor I would add to your practical test.
