Cable and the euro disagree this morning, how I'm trading the divergence

this morning EURUSD and GBPUSD are doing different things, which is unusual. The euro is flat and contained, and cable is pushing up. I wanted to post my approach because divergences like this can be tricky.

When both pairs are moving together, it's mostly a dollar story. When they split, it's more likely to be a story about one of the currencies, which in this case is the pound. That means the cable move might be more related to its own news or flows, and the dollar might not be the driver.

My plan is to trade only the pair that has structure. Cable has a clear push and EURUSD has nothing to trade. I'll wait for a pullback on cable to a level I've marked and look for a continuation entry with a stop below the pullback. I'm not going to try to trade the gap between the two.

I'm being careful on size. A pound specific move can reverse sharply on headlines. And if cable breaks back down through the pullback low, I'm out.

A good check when the pairs split like this is to look at EURGBP. If cable is rising and the euro is flat, EURGBP should be falling, and if it is moving cleanly, that confirms the move is about the pound. If EURGBP is barely moving, I get suspicious that something else is going on, maybe one feed lagging or a short burst that will not last. It takes ten seconds and has stopped me from trading a few moves that looked like pound strength but were just noise on one chart.

If cable gives a pullback to the level I marked and holds it, that is the continuation I want, with the stop under the pullback low and half my usual size because of the headline risk I mentioned. If it slices straight through the level instead, the idea is done and I will not try to buy it lower. EURUSD I am leaving alone either way unless it builds some structure of its own. And if I do get in, I am not moving the stop closer just because it looks good for a few minutes.

For people asking how I know it is a pound story and not the dollar, I also glance at GBPJPY and the dollar index. If GBPJPY is pushing up too and the dollar index is flat, it is pretty clearly the pound. If the dollar index is falling as well, then it is more mixed and the euro should eventually catch up, which changes things. I do not need a perfect answer, I just want to know which currency is doing the work so I trade the pair where that currency is actually moving.
