Manual Trading From a Remote Desktop: Practical Pros and Cons

A VPS is usually associated with EAs, but some manual traders run their platform on a remote server and connect to it from any device.

Pros:
  • Stable connection to the broker, independent of home internet.
  • Lower latency if the VPS is near the broker's server.
  • Same setup accessible from home, office or laptop.
Cons:
  • Remote desktop adds a small delay to screen updates and clicks.
  • Monthly cost.
  • If your own connection drops, you still cannot see the platform.
For manual scalpers, the delay of remote desktop can outweigh the latency gain. For swing traders, stability matters more.

Testing a remote setup for a week alongside the normal one, and comparing order timestamps and fills, gives a clear answer for your own situation rather than relying on general advice.

Do you trade manually through a VPS, and did it make a difference?

I ran MT5 on a London VPS for about six weeks as a manual scalper, and the click delay was the part that mattered.

On EURUSD M1 around 08:00, my home desktop filled limit orders about 80 to 120 ms after the click. Through remote desktop it was closer to 250 to 400 ms on a normal day, and worse when the VPS CPU spiked.

That is enough to miss a tight retest of a level by a pip or two.

Where the VPS still helped was when home internet dropped. I had three outages that summer. With the VPS I could reconnect from the phone and manage open trades. Without it I was blind for fifteen minutes once.

My compromise now is local platform for entries, VPS as a backup terminal with investor login and server-side stops already on. I do not place new orders from the phone unless something is already open.

Did the delay show up more on market orders for you, or on the screen refresh itself?

The failure mode that finally made me write a hard stop was input lag, not just screen delay. Twice through remote desktop I got a stuck click that placed a second market order one pip from the first, and both filled before I could cancel.

My rule now is simple. If round trip input delay on a test click exceeds about 500 ms, I stop placing new orders from that session and switch to the local platform or stand aside.

I test it with a limit a long way from market and a cancel, timed on a phone stopwatch, at the start of London and again after any VPS CPU spike. It takes twenty seconds and has closed the remote card three times this year.

Screen refresh lag alone I can live with for managing stops. Double fills I cannot.

FXS Prop Desk, have you seen stuck clicks on remote desktop, or has your pain been mostly visual delay? I'm curious which one showed up first in your tests.
