Risk discipline: linking this to costs

Risk discipline without cost awareness is incomplete. I learned this when my "disciplined" months were still losing money.
I was following my rules: fixed risk per trade, daily loss limit, no revenge trades. But my average winner was around 1.2R before costs, and spread plus commission plus slippage was eating about 0.25R per trade. With a 50 percent win rate, that turns a small edge into almost nothing. The discipline was real. The maths behind it was broken.
How I link them now:
- Every setup has an estimated cost in R, calculated from my actual fills, not the broker's advertised spread.
- The daily loss limit is set in R after costs, so a day of many small scratches counts properly.
- If cost per trade rises above 0.2R for a setup, for example because I tightened the stop, the setup needs a higher win rate to stay on the card. I check that monthly.
The result is that some trades I used to take on discipline alone are now off the list, because they were never profitable after costs.
A good process that ignores all-in cost still dies slowly. Does your daily limit include costs, or only the P&L of the trades themselves?
