I trade both, but EURUSD is my home pair and gold is a satellite. Here is why it ended up that way.

Costs: on my account, EURUSD costs are low and stable most mornings. Gold costs vary much more, especially around US data, and my all-in cost in R is noticeably higher.

Jump risk: EURUSD moves fairly smoothly in normal conditions. Gold can jump several dollars in seconds, which makes stops less predictable and slippage bigger.

Process: my journal tags work better on EURUSD. The setups are cleaner, and I can tell whether a trade followed the rules. On gold, I often could not tell afterwards whether a loss was a bad setup or just noise.

Temperament: I am better at patient, smaller moves than at handling big swings. Gold rewards a different personality.

What home pair means in practice: EURUSD gets my default attention every morning, full size, and the most review time. Gold gets traded only when it is at a clear level and the spread is normal, at reduced size.

Home pair does not mean marriage. If my EURUSD results fell apart for a quarter, I would look at it again. So far, the numbers support the choice.

Gold stays a satellite at half size and only at clear levels with normal spread. Full attention and full size stay on EURUSD so the journal tags stay comparable week to week.

I lightly disagree that gold is simply the more profitable home for everyone. It rewards a different personality, and forcing that personality on myself produced noise I could not classify as setup error or market jump.

If EURUSD results fell apart for a full quarter I would reopen the choice. So far the numbers still support the home pair rule.

Has your home pair ever flipped after a bad quarter, or do you keep the satellite structure even then? I have not flipped yet, but the review date is on the card.

LondonScalper, the piece I would add is what the satellite does to dollar exposure. A long gold ticket and a long EURUSD ticket are both short the dollar, so a single US print can hit both at once.

I now have a rule against holding gold and EURUSD in the same dollar direction at the same time. If the home pair is already long, a gold long waits until the EURUSD ticket is closed.

Cost in R tells the rest. On my numbers, EURUSD costs about 0.7 pips round turn against a 6 pip stop, roughly 12 percent of R, while gold runs near 0.35 dollars against a 2 dollar stop, about 18 percent, and around US data that gold figure can double.

Timing helps keep the split clean. EURUSD gets the London morning, and gold only gets looked at after the New York data is out and the spread has settled back.

Keeping the two in separate windows also keeps the journal honest. A loss on gold at 14:00 cannot hide inside a EURUSD morning review.

Do you allow both legs in the same dollar direction, or treat them as one combined position for risk? I count them as one now.
