NZDUSD Monday open journal: patterns from the last 10 trading days

I have been keeping a separate NZDUSD log for the last ten trading days, starting from the Monday open, to see how the pair behaves before and during my London session.

Notes so far:
- Both Monday opens had small gaps, under 10 pips, and both were filled before the London open. Too small to trade with my spread, but I logged them anyway.
- The Asia session on NZDUSD is more active than I expected. On six of the ten days, most of the day's range was already done before 07:00 London.
- On those six days, London traded inside the Asia range for most of the morning. Breakout attempts failed four times out of five.
- On the four days where Asia was quiet, London gave one clean directional move each time, usually following AUDUSD.
- Spread on my account is about twice EURUSD in the first London hour, which makes small targets hard.

Early conclusion: NZDUSD is only interesting for me when Asia has been quiet. If the Asia range is already wide, I skip the pair for the day.

Ten days proves nothing on its own. I will keep the log going for another month before I decide whether NZDUSD earns a place on my watchlist. If anyone trades kiwi in London hours, I would like to compare notes.

That fits the New Zealand calendar quite well. NZ data comes out at 10:45 Wellington time, which is late evening in London, somewhere between about 21:45 and 23:45 depending on the season, and RBNZ decisions come at 14:00 Wellington, the middle of the London night. So when NZ has news, the reaction is done long before 07:00, which may well be what your six wide-Asia days are. It might be worth checking which of those six had NZ or Australian data, or a China release, compared with the four quiet ones. If the quiet days are simply the days with nothing on the antipodean calendar, the filter could be set the night before from the calendar instead of measured at 07:00. Kiwi following AUDUSD in London is typical too, since it often trades as the smaller, thinner partner of the Aussie.

I trade kiwi in London a couple of mornings a week, so here is one tweak to compare. Instead of judging Asia by eye, I measure the 00:00 to 07:00 range as a share of the 20 day average daily range.

Above about 60 percent by 07:00, my London breakouts on NZDUSD mostly failed the way your four out of five did. Under 35 percent is where I look for the directional push.

Fairman's calendar idea makes a good pre filter, but I would keep the measured ratio too. Some of my wide Asia days had nothing on the NZ or Australian calendar and came from a China headline instead.

On following AUDUSD, I look at AUDNZD before taking anything. If the cross is flat, kiwi tends to track aussie and I would rather trade the tighter spread in AUDUSD.

If AUDNZD is moving, kiwi has its own story that morning and the wider spread is worth paying. Even then I want a target of at least four times the spread.

Splitting your log by AUDNZD direction might show something within a month. Twenty more sessions should be enough to see whether the split holds.
