Daily loss limit tactics that kept me alive on FTMO

Tactics, not magic. Read your own rules.

What kept me inside limits:

- A soft stop at about 60% of the daily max where I switch to observation only. The hard limit is for accidents, not for a third idea.
- Pre-committed ticket count. When count is done, session is done even if P&L is flat.
- News blackout respected as part of the limit - a spike loss counts, so I do not "use" limit room to gamble a print.

What did not help: moving the soft stop after a winner, or telling myself the limit resets emotionally after one green trade. The limit is a path constraint. I treat it like margin: visible, boring, non-negotiable. Alive means still having a tomorrow on the account.

I write the soft-stop number on the same strip as the news calendar. When both are visible, I stop negotiating with myself about "one more" after a winner. Soft stop is a behaviour tool. Hard limit is a contract tool. I need both visible.

The soft stop at 60% is close to what I use, but I set mine at 50% for the first week of any phase. Early in a challenge I'm more likely to force trades to get ahead of the target, so the tighter soft stop covers the version of me that's in a hurry.

Counting a spike loss inside the limit is the key point. A lot of people treat a news loss as bad luck, don't count it mentally, then take the third idea because the limit should still have room.

I'd add a time element to observation only. After the soft stop I close the platform for an hour, because watching charts after a loss turned into planning a comeback trade for me.

Do you count scratches in the ticket count? I do, because four scratches in a row is usually a sign the session isn't working.

I do count scratches in the ticket count, and that is the part of your pre committed count I would not drop. Four scratches before lunch usually means I am forcing, and the fifth idea is where the soft stop gets tested.

After soft stop I still close the platform for an hour. Observation only with charts open was how I talked myself into one more ticket on two challenge days that should have been done.

The 50% soft stop for week one of a phase stays. From week two I move it to 60% like yours, once the urge to get ahead of the target has usually cooled.

Spike losses count in full toward both the soft and hard numbers. Mentally parking them as bad luck was how I blew a daily limit in 2022 while thinking I still had room.

PropScalpDesk, is your soft stop a mental switch or does something on the platform enforce observation only? I needed the platform version before the behaviour stuck.
