MACD Anatomy: Three Parts, One Message About Momentum
MACD looks complicated but is built from simple pieces. The MACD line is the 12-period exponential moving average minus the 26-period one. The signal line is a 9-period average of the MACD line. The histogram shows the gap between the two.
When the faster average pulls away from the slower one, the MACD line rises, showing momentum building. When they converge, momentum fades. A crossover of the MACD line and the signal line marks a shift in that momentum, not a guaranteed change in price.
Because it uses moving averages, MACD lags. It tends to confirm moves rather than predict them. In trending markets it can keep you in a trade nicely. In ranges, it whipsaws.
The histogram is often more useful than the lines. A shrinking histogram while price still rises tells you momentum is slowing before the lines cross.
Zero-line position adds context. MACD above zero means the faster average sits above the slower one, which matches an uptrend. Many traders take only buy signals above zero and sell signals below it.
Like every default setting, 12-26-9 was designed for daily stock charts. It is not sacred for a fifteen-minute forex chart.
Practical step: compare histogram peaks with price swings on a chart and note how often the histogram turned before price did.
