Troubleshooting, Why Am I Not Profitable?
If you've been trading for a while without consistent profit, a systematic check can reveal the cause. Work through these categories in order.
1. Risk management.
Are you risking more than 1% per trade? Do you use stops? Do losses sometimes exceed your plan?
2. Strategy edge.
Have you backtested at least 100 setups? Is expectancy positive after costs?
3. Execution.
Do you follow your rules? Calculate your rule-following percentage.
4. Trade selection.
Are you taking low-quality setups? Grade them and compare results.
5. Costs.
Are spreads, commissions, and slippage eating your edge?
6. Psychology.
Do emotions drive decisions? Revenge trades, fear of entering, moving stops?
7. Timing.
Are you trading during liquid sessions, or at hours that drain you?
8. Sample size.
Have you traded enough to judge, or is it just a bad streak?
9. Consistency.
Are you changing strategies too often?
10. Life factors.
Sleep, stress, and distractions.
How to use the list:
- Score each category from 1 to 5
- Identify the two lowest scores
- Create a specific action for each
- Re-evaluate after 30 days
Often the problem isn't a lack of knowledge, but the gap between knowledge and behavior.
Find the weakest link, and strengthen it first.
