The 21-Trade Rule-Following Challenge

Profit is unpredictable, but rule-following is something you can control. This challenge measures your discipline directly.

The goal: complete 21 consecutive trades, on demo or very small live risk, that follow every rule in your plan.

Rules for the challenge:

1. Write your rules in a checklist before starting.
2. Before each trade, tick every item.
3. After each trade, record whether you followed the rules. Be honest.
4. If you break any rule, the counter resets to zero.
5. Continue until you reach 21 consecutive rule-following trades.

What counts as a violation:

- Entering without meeting criteria
- Risking more than your limit
- Moving a stop further away
- Trading outside your session
- Taking a revenge trade
- Skipping the journal

Tracking:

Create a simple tally: a row of 21 boxes to fill in. Place it where you can see it.

Reflection:

Each time the counter resets, write what caused it. Look for patterns.

Reward:

When you reach 21, take a day off and celebrate modestly. Then decide whether to extend the challenge to 50.

Why it works:

- It focuses on behavior, not results
- Streak tracking makes discipline tangible
- Resets teach you what triggers mistakes

Results will vary, but the habit of following your plan is worth far more than any single profitable trade.

One rule I'd add: if you break a rule, the count resets to zero, even if the trade won. That's the part that makes it hard, and that's the point. A winning rule break still counts as a break. It also helps to note what caused each reset. After a couple of attempts, the reasons usually repeat. Maybe it's always the stop being moved, or entering before the candle closes. That tells you which rule is the real weak point, and you can focus on it. Getting to 21 might take several tries. That's normal. The attempts that fail show you more about your habits than the one that finally succeeds.

Keep the size tiny for this. The goal is discipline, not profit, and if real money pressure is high you'll be fighting two battles at once. Something like 0.25 percent risk or a cent account is enough to make it feel real without the money distracting you. If you break a rule at trade 15, the count goes back to zero, which is the point of the challenge. It might take 40 or 50 trades to get 21 clean ones in a row the first time. That's useful information, because it shows exactly which rule you find hardest to follow.
