Redefining Success in Trading

Many traders define success as getting rich. That definition is risky: it's outside your control, it encourages gambling behavior, and it ignores everything else that matters. A better definition keeps you healthy and consistent.

Alternative markers of success:

1. Process quality. Following your rules, journaling, reviewing.

2. Survival. Staying in the game year after year.

3. Skill growth. Understanding markets and yourself better.

4. Emotional stability. Handling wins and losses with calm.

5. Reasonable returns. Modest, consistent growth relative to risk.

6. Life balance. Health, relationships, and other goals remain strong.

7. Integrity. Honest about results and careful with others' trust.

How to apply it:

- Write your personal definition of success in one paragraph
- Set goals that match it
- Review it quarterly
- Notice when external pressures pull you away

Why this helps:

- It reduces the pressure to chase quick profits
- It makes progress visible even in flat months
- It encourages decisions you can be proud of

Profits may follow from good process, but they shouldn't be the only scoreboard.

A career built on discipline and honesty can last long after the excitement of any single trade has faded.

Write your own definition of success on a card and place it where you trade. Let it remind you what you're actually building.

How I put this into practice: I set three goals each month that I fully control, like following my risk rules on every trade and doing the review each week. Profit isn't one of them. Oddly, the months I hit those three tend to be the better months anyway. I'd add a yearly goal that's about survival: still trading at the end of the year with the account intact and the same risk rules. It sounds modest, but a lot of people don't make it that far. If you're still here after a year of following your rules, you have a real base to build on, whatever the profit number says.

Comparison is what wrecks this for most people. Someone online had a great month with different capital, different hours and probably different risk. The only fair comparison is you against your own last quarter. Pick three numbers to compare each quarter: rule-following percentage, average R per trade and max drawdown. If those improve, you're progressing, regardless of what anyone else posts. Most of the impressive monthly returns online come from risk levels that would wipe out the account in a bad month, and you rarely see those months posted. Your own steady numbers are a better guide.
