Handling Success, What to Do When Things Start Working

Everyone prepares for losses, but few prepare for success. When results improve, new risks appear: overconfidence, rule-loosening, and lifestyle changes that outpace your actual income.

Common pitfalls after success:

- Increasing risk too quickly
- Abandoning journaling and reviews
- Boasting publicly and creating pressure to perform
- Spending profits before they're secure
- Believing the system is flawless
- Taking on too many pairs or strategies

How to protect your progress:

1. Keep your routine. Same rules, same checklist, same reviews.

2. Scale slowly. Increase risk or account size in small steps, tied to evidence.

3. Withdraw some profits. It makes results real and reduces temptation.

4. Stay humble. Remember that variance continues.

5. Keep learning. Markets change.

6. Watch your emotions. Euphoria is as risky as fear.

7. Maintain relationships and health. Success doesn't replace them.

8. Avoid broadcasting every win. It can fuel ego.

9. Review your best periods. What conditions helped? What can you repeat?

A good question to ask: "If my results stayed average from here, would I still be proud of how I trade?"

Success is a test of character as much as skill. Handle it with the same discipline that created it.

Write a short note to your future self today describing how you want to behave when results are good, and read it whenever things go well.

One sign success is going to your head that I didn't list: you start skipping your pre session checklist because you know the market now. That's usually the first rule to slip, and the rest follow. Another is increasing size mid month because you're up, without the increase being part of a written plan. I'd decide in advance what has to happen before risk goes up, for example three months of positive results with rule following above 90 percent, and then increase by a small step, not a jump. Good runs end. If your size doubled during the run, the first normal drawdown afterwards will feel twice as bad and can wipe out much of the gain.

My own rule after a strong month: risk stays exactly the same for the next one. If I want to increase it, that happens on a schedule I wrote down in advance, never because the last three weeks felt good. My schedule is a review every quarter. If the last 100 trades show positive expectancy and drawdown stayed within limits, risk can go up by a quarter, for example from 1 percent to 1.25 percent. Never more than that in one step. A strong month often comes from favourable market conditions, and those change without notice. Steady increases protect you when they do.
