The Quarterly Plan Review, Updating Your Strategy With Data, Not Mood
Most traders change their strategy when they feel frustrated. Professionals review it on a schedule, using evidence. A quarterly review keeps changes thoughtful and measured.
Set aside two to three hours every three months for this process.
Step 1: Gather data. Collect all trades from the quarter.
Step 2: Compute key metrics. Total R, win rate, average win and loss, maximum drawdown, rule-following percentage.
Step 3: Break results down. By setup, session, pair, day of week, and emotional state.
Step 4: Identify strengths. Which setups and conditions produced the best results?
Step 5: Identify leaks. Where did most losses occur? Which mistakes repeated?
Step 6: Review your rules. Are they clear? Were they followed? Which ones need clarification?
Step 7: Decide on changes. Choose no more than two adjustments. For example, drop a weak setup, or limit trading to one session.
Step 8: Write the updated plan. Include the reasons for changes.
Step 9: Test changes. Use demo or small risk for a set number of trades.
Step 10: Set goals for the next quarter. Focus on process goals.
Rules for the review:
- Don't change anything during a session
- Don't draw conclusions from small samples
- Be honest and curious, not defensive
A calm schedule beats an emotional overhaul every time.
