A Screenshot Naming System That Makes Journaling Painless

A Screenshot Naming System That Makes Journaling Painless

A journal full of unnamed screenshots is useless. Good naming turns a messy folder into a searchable database of your trading.

Here's a simple system.

Folder structure:

- Year
- Month
- Day or trade number

File naming format:

Date_Pair_Direction_Setup_Result

Example: 2026-10-01_EURUSD_Buy_LondonSweep_+2R

You can create two screenshots per trade: one before entry (showing your analysis) and one after the exit (showing the outcome).

Suffixes:

- _plan for the before screenshot
- _result for the after screenshot

How to keep it easy:

1. Take screenshots immediately. Don't wait until the end of the day.

2. Name them right away or in a quick batch at session end.

3. Add a short note. One sentence in a spreadsheet next to each file name.

4. Back up regularly. Use cloud storage or an external drive.

5. Review monthly. Filter by setup type or result to find patterns.

Benefits:

- Quick searching by pair or setup
- Easy comparison of similar trades
- Valuable material for weekly reviews
- Evidence for your own improvement

Ten seconds of organization saves hours of confusion later.

Make your future self's job easier. Your journal is only as useful as it is findable.

Spend ten minutes this weekend renaming your last twenty screenshots with this format. You'll feel the difference the next time you review.

Small addition to the naming system: put the result in R at the end of the filename once the trade closes, like 2026-10-03_EURUSD_L_sweep_+1.2R. Then you can sort a folder and pull up every losing sweep trade in seconds when you're reviewing. On most computers you can just search the folder for "sweep" and "-1R" and see every loser of that type side by side. That's where the real lessons usually are. Seeing ten failed setups next to each other often shows a pattern you'd never notice one at a time, like most of them happening in the first ten minutes after the open, or all of them being against the four hour trend.

An event tag in the filename helps when a trade happens near a release, something like _NFP or _ECB after the setup name. Sorting the folder by that tag a few months later lets you pull up every trade taken around a particular release in seconds, which makes it much easier to see whether those trades behave differently from the rest.

One more thing that saves time: have a single to review folder where new screenshots land first, and only move them into the dated structure after you've written the journal note. Otherwise it's easy to file them and forget they were never reviewed. Set your screenshot tool to save straight into that folder automatically. On Windows, the Snipping Tool and ShareX can both do that. At the end of each session, the folder should be empty. If it has screenshots from three days ago, that's a sign the journaling is slipping, and it's much easier to catch up on two trades than on twenty.
