Self-Talk Scripts, What You Say After a Loss Matters
After a stop loss, many traders say things like "I'm so stupid," "I always mess up," or "I'll never get this right." These phrases may feel normal, but they matter more than you might think.
Harsh self-talk increases stress, damages confidence, and makes it harder to think clearly. It can also push you into revenge trades, where you try to escape the bad feeling.
A better approach is to prepare self-talk scripts in advance, calm statements you use when emotions run high.
Examples:
After a valid loss:
"This was a planned risk. I followed my rules. The next trade is independent."
After a rule-breaking loss:
"I made a mistake, and I can learn from it. What rule did I break, and what will I do differently?"
After a win:
"Good execution. Let me record what worked and keep the same risk."
During a losing streak:
"Streaks are part of the game. I'll reduce size and review my process."
Before a trade:
"I have a plan. I'm ready to accept either outcome."
How to use them:
1. Write your own versions.
2. Keep them visible near your screen.
3. Read them aloud when needed.
4. Notice the difference in your emotional state.
Treat yourself as you'd treat a student you want to succeed: honest, firm, and kind.
Your inner voice is your most constant mentor. Make it a good one.
