Trendlines, How to Draw Them Without Fooling Yourself
Trendlines look easy, but they are one of the most subjective tools in trading. Two traders can draw different lines on the same chart and both feel certain. Here is a disciplined method.
1. Use enough data. Zoom out to see a meaningful trend, not just a few candles.
2. Anchor on clear swing points. For an uptrend line, connect at least two swing lows. For a downtrend line, connect swing highs.
3. Confirm with a third touch. A line with only two points is a hypothesis. A third touch makes it more credible.
4. Don't force the line. If you have to ignore many candles to fit it, it isn't a good line.
5. Use wicks or bodies consistently. Pick one approach and stick to it.
6. Watch the angle. Very steep lines break easily. Moderate slopes tend to last longer.
How to trade them:
- Look for bounces off the line in the trend direction
- Treat a close through the line as an early warning, not a guaranteed reversal
- Combine the line with structure and liquidity; trendlines attract stops too
Common mistakes:
- Redrawing the line after every candle
- Treating it as an exact price
- Trading every touch
Remember that a trendline is a zone of interest. Price can wick through it and still respect it.
Draw lines for a purpose, not for decoration.
