The Inside Bar Strategy, Trading Compression
An inside bar is a candle whose high and low sit completely within the range of the previous candle. It signals compression: the market is pausing before choosing a direction. The previous candle is called the mother bar. The inside bar is the baby inside it.
How to trade it:
1. Identify an inside bar on a higher timeframe such as the 4H or Daily, ideally at a key level or in the direction of the trend.
2. Mark the high and low of the mother bar.
3. Decide your plan: trade a breakout in the direction of the trend, or wait for a sweep of one side and a reversal.
4. For a breakout entry, wait for a candle body to close beyond the mother bar's high or low.
5. Place your stop on the other side of the mother bar, or at the midpoint for a tighter version.
6. Target the next key level, or a measured move equal to the mother bar's size.
Strengths:
- Clear levels
- Defined risk
- Works on many timeframes
Weaknesses:
- Frequent false breakouts
- Tiny mother bars produce poor reward-to-risk
- Ineffective in choppy markets
Tip: combine with liquidity thinking. Many inside bar breakouts fail first, sweeping one side, before the real move.
