Wyckoff Distribution, Spotting the Top
Where accumulation builds a bottom, distribution builds a top. Large players offload positions gradually while price moves sideways after an uptrend. The main stages:
Preliminary supply (PSY). First signs of selling appear, with heavy volume near highs.
Buying climax (BC). A surge of enthusiasm and volume creates the top.
Automatic reaction (AR). A sharp drop sets the range low.
Upthrust (UT/UTAD). A push above the range high that fails, trapping late buyers. This equals a buy-side liquidity sweep.
Sign of weakness (SOW). Price breaks below the range with strong candles.
Markdown. The downtrend begins.
How to apply it:
1. Identify a range after a prolonged rally.
2. Mark the range high and low.
3. Watch for a false break above the high with a close back inside.
4. Wait for a lower-timeframe CHoCH.
5. Enter short on the retest, with a stop above the upthrust.
6. Target the range low, then beyond.
Reality check: real charts are messy. They rarely match textbook diagrams perfectly. Use Wyckoff as a way to think, not a template to force.
Key lesson: when everyone feels the most confident, that is often when large players are quietly selling. Strong emotion near obvious highs is a warning, not a signal.
