My blackout window for BOJ headlines when trading EURUSD

BOJ headline blackout when I am in EURUSD

EURUSD is not USDJPY, but BOJ headlines still shove the dollar complex around. I used to “stay in the euro” through yen fireworks and call it compartmentalisation. The journal called it correlation blindness with a polite accent.

Desk rule now:
  • Unscheduled BOJ / intervention-style headlines: flatten EURUSD if spread widens or if USDJPY is in freefall or melt-up beyond a set threshold.
  • Scheduled BOJ events: pre-written blackout on EURUSD as well as USDJPY — shorter than for yen pairs, but not zero.
  • No “EURUSD is quiet so it is fine” overrides while yen tape is broken.
Cross-asset humility beats pair tunnel vision. A calm euro chart can still be a dollar trade in disguise when yen policy shocks hit.

Do you black out EURUSD around BOJ noise, or do you treat it as yen-only risk until EURUSD itself widens?

I keep a tiny USDJPY watch window even on euro-only days for this reason. If yen is vertical and euro is “calm,” I treat calm as suspicious until spreads and dollar proxies agree the shock has passed.
