Moby Dick, reimagined for the high-frequency trading terminal.

Chapter I: Loomings
Call me Retail. Some years ago—never mind how long precisely—having little or no equity in my bank account, and nothing particular to interest me in the bond markets, I thought I would boot up cTrader and navigate the leveraged part of the world.
I signed onto The Pequod, not a ship, but a brutally fast, ultra-low-latency bare-metal VPS co-located in London. Our mission was to hunt for liquidity in the deepest, most volatile markets.
The Captain
Our server was commanded by Captain Ahab, a veteran algorithmic trader. Years ago, during a freak flash-crash on XAG/USD (Silver), a massive institutional market-maker—a great White Candle—had completely wiped out his master account. It took his margin, his tier-1 broker status, and a piece of his sanity.

Ahab no longer traded for consistent daily returns. He wasn't interested in steady 2-pip scalps. He was hunting the White Whale: the exact predatory algorithm that had ruined him.
The First Mate
Starbuck was not a man, but Ahab’s strict Risk Management Expert Advisor. It was a brilliantly coded script designed to protect the account equity at all costs. It constantly sent push notifications to Ahab’s phone:
"Captain, the daily drawdown approaches 4%. We must close the grid. A lot size this large is madness against the macro trend!"
But Ahab simply disabled the API token. "To the last pip I grapple with thee!" he muttered at his glowing monitors. "From hell's heart I stab at thy resistance level!"

The Chase
For months, The Pequod sailed across the choppy seas of the major currency pairs. We scalped the Euro, we faded the GBP breakouts, and we automated hundreds of small, profitable trades. But Ahab ignored the profits. He just stared unblinking at the Silver 1-minute chart, watching the Level 2 order book, waiting to see the footprint of the White Whale.
The Encounter
Finally, on a quiet Friday afternoon right before the daily rollover, the volume suddenly spiked. The White Whale breached. It was a massive, sudden liquidity grab—a huge wick designed to hunt the stops of retail traders just below a major support zone.
Ahab went all in. He bypassed every single risk parameter on his terminal. He maxed out his leverage, stacking dozens of standard lots, trying to trap the institutional algorithm in a relentless grid of sell-limits.
"I’ll chase him round the Fibonacci retracement, and round the 200-day moving average, and round perdition's flames before I give him up!"

The Liquidation
But the market maker absorbed it all. The spread widened to astronomical, broker-breaking levels. The White Whale surged upward in a god-candle, completely ignoring technical analysis, trendlines, and a severely overbought RSI.
Starbuck's final error log flashed on the screen before the terminal began to freeze under the weight of the incoming tick data. Ahab, refusing to accept a loss, threw his entire remaining free margin into one last market order, effectively tethering himself to the violent price action.
The margin call hit like a harpoon.
The terminal went dark. The account was dragged down to 0.00, swallowed by the depths of the market. Only one small automated trailing-stop script—me—survived, floating in the wreckage of the server logs to tell the tale.
