Edmond stood in the center of the cell, still wearing the shredded, salt-stained remains of his midnight-blue tuxedo. The silence was agonizing. He pressed his hands against the concrete walls. They were freezing, damp with condensation.
"Hey!" Edmond shouted, slamming his fist against the steel door. "Hey! You can't hold me here without a charge! Morrel Capital’s legal team will tear this place apart! Do you hear me?"
The acoustics of the cell swallowed his voice, reflecting it back as a dull, lifeless echo.

Three days passed. Or maybe it was three weeks. The LED light never dimmed, permanently blinding Edmond’s circadian rhythm. His meals—a gray, flavorless nutrient paste with exactly 1,200 calories—were delivered through a mechanized slot at random intervals, ensuring he could never build a mental clock based on feeding times.
His quantitative mind, deprived of data, began to feed on itself.
He paced the cell. Six steps forward. Pivot. Six steps back. He counted his own heartbeats to measure minutes. He tried to calculate the probabilistic outcomes of his situation, drawing decision trees in the condensation on the walls.

Node 1: Villefort secures the actual routing data. Probability: High. Node 2: Villefort realizes Edmond is a patsy and orders his release. Probability: Moderate.
But as his tuxedo turned to rags and his fingernails split from scratching algorithms into the concrete, the math began to change. The variables shifted. The reality of his situation crystallized with brutal, algorithmic efficiency.
On what he estimated was his fortieth day, the hydraulic door hissed open

Edmond shielded his eyes. A man stepped into the cell. He wore a perfectly tailored charcoal suit that looked alien in the sterile, brutalist environment. He carried an encrypted tablet and a silver cane. This was the Warden—a former CIA extraordinary rendition specialist who had been privatized to manage the government’s darkest off-balance-sheet liabilities.
"Inmate 34," the Warden said softly, examining Edmond’s emaciated frame and hollow eyes. "You have requested an audience with me two hundred and fourteen times through the intercom."

"I am a cooperating witness," Edmond whispered, his throat raw, his voice trembling with a desperate, pathetic hope. "Gérard de Villefort. Call him. Check the CFTC ledger. He promised me protection."
The Warden looked down at his tablet, swiping through a heavily redacted file. He didn't smile, but a look of genuine, sterile pity crossed his face.
"There is no CFTC ledger entry for an Edmond Dantès," the Warden replied quietly. "There is no open investigation. Morrel Capital issued a statement last month that their Head of Proprietary Trading absconded with client funds and is presumed dead by suicide."

The words hit Edmond like a physical blow. The air rushed out of his lungs.
"No," Edmond gasped, grabbing the lapels of his ruined tuxedo. "No, the files. The whistleblower tip. Villefort has the unredacted files."
"Gérard de Villefort was appointed Chairman of the SEC yesterday morning," the Warden stated, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "He is currently honeymooning in Monaco. You are a ghost, 34. You do not exist on any global registry. You are a rounding error that has been permanently written off the books."

"My fiancé," Edmond sobbed, falling to his knees on the cold concrete. "Mercédès."
"She is liquidating your estate," the Warden said, turning toward the door. "This facility is designed for permanent containment. You will never see a courtroom, a terminal, or the sun again. Conserve your energy. Panic is highly inefficient here."
The Warden stepped out. The steel door slid shut.

Edmond remained on his knees in the center of the blinding white cell. The decision trees he had drawn on the walls seemed to melt away. The math was finally solved.
Villefort hadn't made a mistake. Danglars hadn't made a mistake. Fernand hadn't made a mistake.

It was a perfectly executed, hostile takeover of his life.
A ragged, inhuman scream tore from Edmond’s throat, bouncing off the concrete walls—the sound of a man watching his entire net worth, his future, and his sanity gap-down to absolute zero.

Chapter 8:
The Bloomberg terminal was bolted behind a panel of bulletproof acrylic, its screen glowing with the toxic, neon radiation of delayed data. In Sector D of Château d'If, the Warden did not believe in physical torture. For the rogue quants, fallen hedge fund managers, and sovereign wealth embezzlers housed in the black site, sensory deprivation was only the baseline. The true punishment was the terminal.
It was a read-only feed, intentionally delayed by exactly one hundred and sixty-eight hours. One week.
