"When can I call Mercédès? My fiancé?" Edmond asked, standing up as far as the handcuffs would allow. "She thinks I’m never coming back."

"Soon," Villefort lied, his hand on the steel door handle. "Trust the system, Dantès."

Villefort stepped out of the interrogation room and pulled the heavy door shut, locking the deadbolt. He walked briskly down the corridor toward the processing desk, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"Director?" the desk sergeant asked. "What’s the play on the Dantès kid? Do we process him for bail?"

Villefort pulled a red classification folder from his briefcase. He signed his name at the bottom of a National Security detention order.

"No bail. No phone calls. He is a flight risk and a threat to national financial security," Villefort said, handing the file to the sergeant. "Execute a covert rendition. Transfer him to the Château d'If Black Site by dawn. And scrub his name from the public ledger."

Chapter 5:

The air in Georgetown was thick with the scent of magnolias and the quiet, crushing weight of generational power. Gérard de Villefort’s government-issued Tahoe pulled up to the wrought-iron gates of the Saint-Méran estate just before midnight. The engagement party he had abruptly abandoned three hours earlier was still in full swing, a symphony of crystal clinking and senators trading whispers over beluga caviar.

Villefort sat in the back of the SUV for a long moment, staring at the folded piece of paper in his hand. P.A. Noirtier. The name was a venomous snake coiled in his palm.

He slipped the paper back into his breast pocket, stepped out into the humid Washington night, and adjusted his Tom Ford cuffs. His heart rate, which had been redlining since he left the Hoover Building, slowed to a rhythmic, sociopathic calm. He was no longer a panicked son trying to hide his father’s treason; he was the apex predator of the CFTC, returning to claim his throne.

He bypassed the grand ballroom and walked directly into the mahogany-paneled library. Senator Saint-Méran was waiting for him.

The Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee was a man forged from old money and ruthless political calculus. He stood by the roaring gas fireplace, swirling a glass of neat bourbon. He did not smile when his future son-in-law entered.

"You leave my daughter alone at her own engagement dinner to chase a routing anomaly in Marseille," the Senator said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that could tank equity markets. "I told the Secretary of the Treasury you were handling a national security crisis. I hope, for your sake, Gérard, that you actually were."

"I was," Villefort replied smoothly, closing the heavy oak doors behind him. "We intercepted a black-swan event. A highly sophisticated node of shadow-banking, funneling institutional capital directly to sanctioned paramilitary groups in Eastern Europe."

Saint-Méran’s eyes narrowed. The irritation vanished, replaced by political opportunism. "Who’s the target?"

"A quantitative savant named Edmond Dantès. Head of Prop Trading at Morrel Capital. He was using bespoke iceberg algorithms and dark pool routing to bypass our AML filters. We raided his yacht tonight. I just finished the interrogation."

"Morrel Capital," the Senator mused, taking a slow sip of bourbon. "They’re heavily leveraged in the Asian session. A public indictment like this will liquidate them by Tuesday. The collateral damage to retail investors will be messy. The administration won't like the optics of a market crash a month before the midterms."

"There won't be an indictment," Villefort said, stepping closer to the fire. "There won't be a trial, and there won't be a press release. I invoked Title 18, Section 2339C. Dantès is classified as a Tier-One financial terrorist. I ordered a covert rendition. As of ten minutes ago, he is off the grid, permanently detained at a black site. Morrel Capital will simply think their golden boy absconded with client funds."

Saint-Méran stared at Villefort, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his weathered face. This was the exact ruthlessness he required in a future SEC Chairman. No messy public trials. No discovery phase. Just absolute, surgical decapitation of a problem.

"And the capital?" the Senator asked. "Who was the ultimate beneficiary of the transfers?"

Villefort did not blink. "A decentralized autonomous organization. A ghost entity. The routing hashes terminated in a series of burned crypto wallets. Unrecoverable. But the threat is neutralized."
