The realization broke the final, fragile gear in his mind.
He had spent his entire life destroying men like Pierre Morrel and Edmond Dantès for fractional percentage points of yield, convinced that capital was the only true shield against the brutality of the world. And yet here, at the absolute bottom of the chart, stripped of every euro he had ever stolen, his life was saved not by an algorithm, but by the very human grace he had spent his career shorting.

Danglars collapsed against the stone doorframe. He brought the bread to his mouth, weeping uncontrollably as he ate. Between ragged, desperate bites, he continued to whisper to the empty mountains, frantically quoting bid and ask prices for non-existent derivatives, trying to price the value of a single piece of bread in a market that had permanently closed its doors to him.

Chapter 49: The Asylum of Villefort
The high-security psychiatric ward of Saint-Anne Hospital in Paris was a sterile, sound-damped vault of white acoustic panels and unbreakable polycarbonate windows. In the private observation room on the third floor, Gérard de Villefort sat on the edge of a bolted-down foam mattress, staring intently at the blank white wall across from him.
The man who had once commanded the regulatory might of the SEC, the prosecutor who had signed away Edmond Dantès’ life with the stroke of a pen, was wearing a standard-issue institutional jumpsuit. His gray hair had grown out in unkempt tufts, and his fingers—once accustomed to signing freeze-orders and directing billion-dollar indictments—scratched endlessly against the smooth surface of the wall.

He was not writing words. He was drawing double-entry ledgers.
The forty million euro margin call that had vaporized his family’s blind trust had triggered a catastrophic, irreversible recursive loop in his mind. The quantitative shock had short-circuited his legal intellect, reducing his consciousness to a single, agonizing mathematical loop: Debit, Credit. Assets, Liabilities. The ledger must reconcile.

The heavy steel-reinforced door clicked open. Dr. Renard, the chief neuropsychiatrist, stepped into the room accompanied by two orderlies. He held a clipboard containing Villefort’s latest cognitive metrics.
"Gérard," the doctor said softly, approaching the edge of the mattress. "How are the markets today?"

Villefort did not look up. His finger continued to trace invisible debit lines across the wall, his lips moving in a frantic, silent whisper.
"The spread is unbalanced," Villefort muttered, his voice raspy and devoid of its old prosecutorial authority. "The liability column is infinite. I forgot to account for the tail risk. The statutory compliance... it has no safety net. We are completely unhedged."

Dr. Renard sighed quietly. He had spent two weeks attempting to anchor Villefort back to reality, but the former Chairman’s psyche had built an impenetrable firewall against the truth. Whenever he was reminded of his wife Héloïse’s institutionalization or the total zero-balance of his accounts, his brain simply executed an emergency system wipe to protect itself from the trauma.

"You haven't touched your lunch, Gérard," Dr. Renard noted, gesturing to the tray of food on the small metal table.
Villefort finally turned his head. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and completely hollow, reflecting the stark white of the room. He looked at the doctor not as a medical professional, but as an aggressive institutional auditor holding a hostile subpoena.

"You're late with the audit," Villefort whispered, leaning forward, his voice dropping to an urgent, conspiratorial hiss. "The compliance committee is coming up the stairs. They saw the off-balance-sheet SPV. They found the routing hash from Marseille."
"There is no committee, Gérard," Dr. Renard replied gently, sitting in the plastic chair across from him. "You are safe here. No one is auditing you."
"You don't understand!" Villefort suddenly shrieked, scrambling backward on the mattress and pressing his spine.
