They plummeted seventy feet through the freezing mist, the roaring turbines of the stealth transport instantly swallowed by the storm as the pilot broke away to avoid detection. Elias hit the jagged, frost-slicked basalt of the caldera floor, bending his knees to absorb the kinetic shock.

The environment was a brutal contradiction. The air was freezing, but the volcanic rock beneath their boots radiated a deep, geothermal heat. Thick clouds of sulfurous steam billowed from massive, reinforced steel exhaust vents bored directly into the side of the mountain.

Vanger hadn't just built a data center; he had hollowed out a volcano.

"The primary intake shaft," Gideon signaled, pointing his rifle toward a massive, ten-foot-wide circular steel grate recessed into the rock face. It was venting exhaust from the subterranean turbines that powered the facility.

They moved with swift, silent precision across the jagged basalt. Gideon didn't bother picking the lock. He pulled a directional shaped charge from his webbing, molded it to the heavy steel hinges of the grate, and stepped back.

"Firing," Gideon whispered into the comms.

A sharp, concussive CRACK echoed off the canyon walls. The hinges instantly vaporized into white-hot slag, and the massive steel grate collapsed inward, falling into the dark shaft with a heavy metallic boom.

They stepped into the throat of the mountain.

The transition was violently physical. The freezing Patagonian storm vanished, replaced by a suffocating, hundred-and-ten-degree industrial heat. The air tasted of copper, ozone, and sulfur. The deafening, low-frequency roar of massive geothermal turbines vibrated through the soles of their boots, a relentless mechanical heartbeat.

Elias unholstered his suppressed 9mm and tapped his wrist monitor. He wasn't looking for thermal signatures; he was hunting the base-12 echo of Commander de Molay’s ghost.

"The localized intranet is heavily shielded, but the biometric spoof is leaking geometric radiation," Elias analyzed, watching the cascading data on his wrist. "The core is three hundred yards down. Past the primary turbine hall."

They descended a steep, grated steel catwalk, moving deeper into the geothermal facility.

The turbine hall was a sprawling, subterranean cavern illuminated by the harsh, amber glare of sodium-vapor lights. Massive, high-pressure steam pipes, thick as redwood trunks, crisscrossed the ceiling, feeding three colossal industrial turbines that spun with terrifying, deafening velocity.

"Contact," Gideon hissed, instantly dropping to a knee behind a thick steel junction box.

Elias slid in behind him.

Moving across the floor of the turbine hall were six elite operatives. They did not wear the tactical black of the Hashashin or the heavy armor of De Molay’s zealots. They wore sleek, grey urban combat gear, their movements flawlessly synchronized, their assault rifles raised in a perfect sweeping formation.

"Vanger’s surviving BIS security," Gideon murmured, tracking the point man through his optics. "They found the breached grate. They are hunting."

"We can't get pinned down in this heat," Elias said, sweat pouring down his face, his heavy parka already stifling in the hundred-degree ambient temperature. "If we engage in a sustained firefight, Vanger will realize we are inside and wipe the quantum core before we can isolate De Molay’s ghost."

"Then we don't sustain it," Gideon stated. "We break them."

Gideon didn't wait for the operatives to acquire their position. He stepped out from behind the junction box, raising his heavy rifle, and unleashed a devastating, controlled burst.

The heavy .300 Blackout rounds tore through the ambient roar of the turbines, punching cleanly through the ballistic vests of the two leading operatives. They crumpled to the grated steel floor before they even registered the threat.

But the remaining four BIS operators were consummate professionals. They didn't panic. They instantly broke formation, diving behind the massive steel pylons supporting the steam pipes, and returned fire with surgical precision.

Bullets shrieked off the junction box, showering Elias and Gideon in sparks and shredded steel.

"They have the high ground on the flanking catwalk!" Gideon roared over the gunfire, pinning one operative down with suppressive fire. "I cannot cover both angles!"

Elias didn't try to out-shoot the tier-one operatives. He looked at the environment. He looked at the massive, superheated steam pipes running directly above the flanking catwalk where two of the BIS guards were maneuvering to catch Gideon in a crossfire.

He didn't see pipes. He saw a pressurized equation.

Elias noted the massive, red pressure-release valve on the primary manifold just above the catwalk. The analog gauge beside it was pinned in the red, holding back supercritical steam at four hundred pounds per square inch.

"Gideon, brace!" Elias shouted.

Elias stepped out from cover, ignoring the bullets snapping the air inches from his face. He raised his 9mm, took a half-second to calculate the trajectory, and fired twice.

He didn't aim at the men. He aimed at the heavy brass locking collar of the pressure-release valve.

The 9mm rounds shattered the locking mechanism.

The result was an instantaneous, apocalyptic eruption. The valve blew completely off the pipe, unleashing a blinding, deafening geyser of supercritical steam directly onto the flanking catwalk.

The two BIS operatives didn't even have time to scream. The thermal shockwave hit them with the force of a physical wall, flash-boiling the air in their lungs and throwing their lifeless bodies over the railing to the floor fifty feet below.

The sudden, blinding cloud of expanding white steam instantly blinded the thermal optics of the remaining two operatives on the ground floor.

Gideon didn't hesitate. The tactical chief charged straight through the blinding vapor, a terrifying shadow moving with impossible speed. He closed the distance before the operatives could clear their optics, executing both men with two point-blank, suppressed shots.

The turbine hall fell silent, save for the deafening, continuous roar of the ruptured steam pipe.

"Clear," Gideon called out, his silhouette emerging from the boiling white fog.

Elias holstered his weapon, wiping the sweat and condensation from his eyes. They had survived the kinetic bottleneck, but the hardest part of the equation was still waiting for them in the dark.

They pushed past the bleeding corpses, moving rapidly toward the heavy blast doors at the far end of the hall. The air grew noticeably colder as they approached the inner sanctum. The suffocating geothermal heat gave way to the sharp, clinical chill of localized liquid-helium cooling.

Elias pulled the obsidian Genesis Node from his pocket. It was pulsing with an erratic, angry golden light. It could feel the corrupted ghost of its former master echoing on the other side of the steel.

"He's in there," Elias whispered, staring at the heavy biometric lock sealing the core. "Vanger. And the machine."
