"The market is a perfectly efficient mechanism for price discovery, Baron," the Count said, his voice echoing smoothly in the dark. "Eventually, it strips away the leverage, the synthetic derivatives, and the bespoke suits, revealing the true, intrinsic value of the underlying asset. Look at your balance sheet now. What are you worth without stolen equity?"
Danglars dragged himself toward the bars, his hands trembling violently as he gripped the cold iron. His face was smeared with dirt, his eyes hollowed out by absolute psychological terror.

"Take the wallet," Danglars rasped, his voice cracking. "There are routing codes in the cache. Backdoors into the AMF regulatory servers. You can have them. Just give me a flight to South America. Give me my life."
"Your life was purchased with a fraudulent transaction fourteen years ago," the Count replied, stepping closer to the bars. The dim, flickering incandescent bulb above cast sharp, lethal shadows across his pale face. "You engineered a hostile takeover of a junior analyst’s existence. You drafted the anonymous report. You routed it through Fernand’s network. You handed the toxic asset to Villefort, and you stepped in to absorb the boy’s desk, his salary, and his future."

Danglars froze. His breath plumed in the freezing air.
The Count was not speaking in theoretical analogies anymore. He was reading the unredacted ledger.
"Who are you?" Danglars whispered, a cold, paralyzing dread creeping up his spine. "You can't have the data. The servers were wiped. Morrel Capital purged the physical logs."

"You cannot purge a ghost from the system, Danglars," the Count said softly.
The Count reached up and slowly unbuttoned the collar of his tailored shirt. He pulled the fabric aside, exposing the jagged, raised scar tissue wrapping around his collarbone—the permanent, physical burn of the biometric shock-collar from Cell 34.
"Look at the anomaly you thought you deleted," the Count commanded, his voice dropping to a terrifying, absolute zero. "Look at the man you liquidated to balance your own ambition."

Danglars stared at the scars, and then he looked up into the cold, gray eyes of the apex predator standing before him. The bespoke illusion of the Count of Monte Cristo fractured, and the underlying reality crashed into Danglars’ mind with the force of a catastrophic margin call.
He saw the nineteen-year-old boy from the Marseille trading floor.
"Dantès," Danglars choked out, his knees giving way. He collapsed onto the damp concrete, backing away from the bars until he hit the far wall of the cell. "It’s impossible. You starved in the dark. The SEC declared you dead."

"The state declared me dead," Edmond corrected, his eyes burning with the cold fire of a perfectly executed vengeance. "But Faria taught me how to survive the bear market you engineered. I spent four years digging through the foundation of the global economy. I spent the next decade acquiring the capital to buy the world you loved. I didn't just survive your betrayal, Danglars. I compounded it."
"Kill me," Danglars sobbed, burying his face in his hands, entirely broken. "Just execute the trade. The ledger is reconciled. Put a bullet in my head and close the account."

Edmond stood in the silence, watching the architect of his suffering beg for liquidation.
In his mind, he felt the heavy, silver revolver Pierre Morrel had held to his own head. He saw Albert stepping away from the Bloomberg anchor desk, sacrificing his inheritance for the truth. He heard the final, rattling breath of Abbé Faria echoing in the darkness of Château d'If: Do not let the vengeance margin-call your humanity.

If Edmond executed the Baron, he would become indistinguishable from the sociopaths who had framed him. He would be trading his own soul to close a worthless position.
Edmond reached into the pocket of his topcoat. He pulled out a single, heavily circulated one-euro coin. He tossed it through the iron bars. It chimed sharply against the concrete, rolling to a stop perfectly in front of Danglars’ trembling hands.

"I am not going to kill you," Edmond said, his voice devoid of anger, drained of all the kinetic fury that had fueled him for fourteen years. "Death is an exit liquidity you have not earned. I am going to leave you exactly as you left me. Bankrupt. Isolated. Stripped of every illusion of power you ever held."

Danglars stared at the single euro coin, the ultimate, terrifying proof of his new reality.
"Your account is closed, Baron," Edmond whispered. "You are permanently delisted."
Edmond Dantès turned his back on the cell and walked away into the dark, his footsteps fading until there was nothing left in the catacombs but the sound of Danglars weeping over a single, worthless coin.
