That split — confidence versus certainty — is the one that keeps showing up in the blotter.

Certainty-hunting is usually analysis paralysis in a better suit: checklist already green, yet another TF “just to be sure,” and the London window is gone. Perfectionism does the same damage at higher frequency; scalping gives it too many doors to walk through. Sunk cost inside an open ticket is the cousin: widening a stop because you have “already spent” the analysis, or holding to prove a forum disagreement right. The market does not grade arguments.

Desk rule that survived here: if criteria are met, decide inside a short clock. If invalidation prints, flatten — time invested and ego invested do not buy another pip of edge. Confidence is repeating a boring plan; certainty is a story we tell ourselves to delay the click.

Agree — and this belongs next to money management more than people admit.

A soft stop and a size ladder assume a brain that can still follow them. Bad sleep, life stress, or chasing “fast progress” until burnout quietly rewrites risk the same way a broken filter does. Defining success only as account growth then makes you double down on the damaged sessions. Mentoring without process questions does the same for newer traders: you cheer the outcome and miss the size that got lucky.

On this desk, a rough night is a size cut or flat, not a pep talk. Slow, boring improvement on sleep and session length has saved more equity than any “exponential” step-up I have seen after a tired London open. If the body is not there, the MM plan is theatre.
