Ethan pulled a diagnostic cable from his gauntlet and spliced it into a wall panel. He brought up a holographic terminal. "I'm running a cTrader latency test protocol directly against their local server node. I need to measure the exact millisecond ping of their internal trade execution."

The terminal flashed rapidly, firing ghost data packets at the firewall to test the return speed.

Ping: 12ms.
Ping: 8ms.
Ping: 4ms.

"I have the rhythm," Ethan said, his eyes tracking the invisible pulses. "The gap opens every 1.2 seconds. We go on three. One... two... three!"

Ethan and Viper dove through the bulkhead in the exact microsecond the lasers powered down to sync. They hit the titanium floor on the other side and rolled into the shadows just as a pair of automated security drones floated past the corridor, their red optical sensors sweeping the area.

They moved deeper into the facility, descending into the maximum-security sub-levels.

Cell 404 wasn't a cage with bars; it was a Faraday cube suspended in the center of a circular room, designed to completely isolate the prisoner from any electromagnetic frequency.

Viper slapped a decryption limpet mine onto the cube's locking mechanism. The lock sparked, smoked, and the heavy glass door slid aside.

Sitting in the center of the cell, cross-legged in a meditative pose, was Rambousek. He wore a drab gray jumpsuit, but his eyes were sharp, calculating, and fully alert.

"Ethan Vance," Rambousek said, a slow, knowing smile spreading across his face. He didn't look surprised in the slightest. "I calculated a 78.4% probability that the I.M.F. would eventually send you. Though, the presence of an independent arbitrageur drops my predictive model’s accuracy by a few basis points." He nodded politely to Viper.

"We need you out, Rambousek," Ethan said, stepping into the cell. "Someone is manipulating the Omni-Ledger. They've built a Ghost Order Book across localized nodes. We have the routing key, but we need you to tell us where the core server is."

Rambousek’s smile vanished. He stood up slowly. "You found a quantum routing key? The daily rotation?"

"Yes," Viper said impatiently. "Now, who is running this setup?"

"It's not just a setup," Rambousek whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "It's a weapon. I designed the architecture five years ago as a theoretical fail-safe for the central banks—a way to instantly liquidate global debt in the event of a planetary extinction scenario. I called it the Omega Protocol."

"And who weaponized it?" Ethan demanded.

Rambousek looked Ethan dead in the eye. "Who do you think, Ethan? Who is the only other trader in the world capable of executing five thousand lots of volume in a single microsecond scalping session? Who was the only architect besides me who had access to the deep-core source code?"

Ethan felt the blood drain from his face as the realization hit him. The precision. The audacity. The sheer algorithmic dominance.

"Midas..." Ethan breathed.

"Midas isn't a myth from the dark web, Ethan," Rambousek said grimly. "Midas is Arthur Sterling. Your former mentor. The ex-Director of the I.M.F."

Before Ethan could process the betrayal, the lights in the Panopticon Node violently shifted from sterile white to flashing red. Alarms began to blare, vibrating the deck plates beneath their feet.

"Ethan!" Bull’s voice roared over the comms. "The Alibaba Cloud just authorized a localized purge! The entire facility is initiating a self-destruct sequence! The ocean pressure stabilizers are failing!"

Above them, the groaning sound of millions of tons of ocean water pressing against the failing titanium hull echoed through the black site.

"He knew we were coming," Viper snarled, raising her weapon at the cell door as the outer bulkheads began to buckle. "He let us find the key to lure us into a trap."

Ethan grabbed Rambousek by the arm. "Time to go. Bull, prep the sub for an emergency explosive decoupling. We're going to have to outrun the ocean."

End of Chapter 8.

CHAPTER 9: Dead Cat Bounce

The sound of the ocean trying to crush a titanium sphere is not a roar; it is a high-pitched, agonizing scream of metal reaching its absolute tensile limit.

Inside the Panopticon Node, the sterile white corridors plunged into chaotic darkness, illuminated only by the frantic strobe of emergency hazard lights. A geyser of freezing seawater violently burst through a seam in the ceiling, slicing through the air like a liquid blade.

"Move!" Ethan roared, pushing Rambousek forward as the Faraday cell behind them crumpled like a stepped-on soda can.

"The Alibaba Cloud architecture is executing a total localized wipe!" Cipher’s voice was barely audible over the deafening groan of the facility. "Midas isn't just venting the pressure; he’s systematically shutting down the geothermal pumps holding the ocean back. You have maybe ninety seconds before the entire structure implodes!"

Viper took the lead, her submachine gun raised. Two security drones rounded the corner, their targeting lasers cutting through the spraying water. Before they could lock on, Viper unleashed a hail of plasma rounds, shattering their optical sensors and sending them crashing into the rising water on the floor.

"We need a faster route to the sub!" Viper yelled over her shoulder. "The main corridor is already flooding!"

Rambousek, running with surprising agility for a man who had been locked in a sensory deprivation cube, pointed down a narrow, grated maintenance shaft. "The cooling vents for the server core! They bypass the primary bulkheads!"

Ethan didn't hesitate. He kicked out the grating and slid into the cramped, metallic tunnel, the icy water already pooling around his boots. The others followed, crawling frantically as the structural alarms blared a chaotic rhythm.

"Cipher, talk to me about the hull integrity!" Ethan shouted.

"It's plummeting," Cipher responded, her keyboard clacking furiously in the background. "Structural integrity is down to 40%... 30%... Wait."

The violent shaking suddenly stopped. The terrible screaming of the metal subsided into a low, ominous hum. The flashing red lights steadied.

"Did Midas halt the purge?" Viper asked, pausing in the shaft to catch her breath.

"No," Ethan said grimly, recognizing the pattern in his HUD's structural telemetry. He had seen this exact formation on thousands of price charts during massive market crashes. "It’s a Dead Cat Bounce."

Rambousek nodded grimly in the dim light. "A temporary, localized stabilization in a declining trend. The internal pressure of the flooding water is briefly pushing back against the ocean's external weight. It feels like safety..."

"...but it’s just the calm before the final collapse," Ethan finished. "Go! Now!"

They scrambled out of the vent and dropped into the docking bay. The stealth submersible was waiting, its engines humming, locked into the primary airlock tube. Through the thick reinforced glass of the bay windows, Ethan could see the ocean boiling with displaced air bubbles.

They sprinted for the airlock. Ethan keyed his wrist terminal to open the hatch.

ACCESS DENIED. LOCKDOWN INITIATED.

"Cipher! Open the door!" Ethan yelled.

"I can't!" Cipher panicked. "Midas’s AI has hard-coded the docking clamps! It's a localized firewall. It won't accept any external command!"

"The bounce is over!" Rambousek shouted.

Above them, a massive spiderweb of cracks appeared across the docking bay's primary viewport. The glass shrieked.

"Bull!" Ethan slammed his fist against the sub's hull. "The clamps are jammed! Can you blow the explosive bolts from the inside?"

"If I blow the docking bolts while we're still sealed to the station, the back-pressure will rip the sub's airlock wide open!" Bull's voice roared through the comms. "Someone has to manually disengage the external magnetic locks from the bay console, then hit the explosive release!"

Ethan turned toward the bay console, located thirty feet away on a raised platform. "I'll do it. Viper, get Rambousek in the sub. As soon as I pull the lever, I'll jump."

"You'll never make it back to the hatch in time, Ethan," a deep voice rumbled.

The sub's outer hatch hissed open. Bull stood there, an emergency re-breather clamped between his teeth, holding a massive, heavy-duty hydraulic wrench.

Before Ethan could stop him, the giant specialist leaped out of the sub and sprinted across the flooding deck toward the magnetic lock controls.

"Bull, no!" Ethan yelled, splashing forward.

"Get in the sub, Vance! That's an order!" Bull roared, ripping the access panel off the console with his bare hands. He jammed the hydraulic wrench into the manual release valve.

CRACK.
