"Baphomet is a medieval engine," Elias said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal register. "It relies on historical cycles. Prometheus relies on infinite leverage. We can't fight them in the order book, Gideon. If they can print infinite money, they can absorb infinite losses. The rules of capitalism don't apply to the entity that owns the printing press."

"Then how do you kill a central bank?" Gideon asked, racking the slide of his sidearm with a heavy, metallic clack.

Elias turned away from the monitors, looking out through the reinforced glass at the freezing, violent expanse of the North Sea. The algorithmic war had reached its absolute physical limit.

"You don't fight the money," the Grand Master said, his eyes burning with a terrifying, absolute clarity. "You physically disconnect the printer. We are going to Basel, Gideon. We are going to rob the Bank for International Settlements."

Chapter 38: The Basel Infiltration

The rain in Basel fell in sheets of freezing, absolute grey, slicking the cobblestones of the medieval city. Towering above the 15th-century architecture, a brutalist monolith of reinforced concrete and blast-proof glass pierced the low-hanging clouds.

The Bank for International Settlements. The central bank of central banks. It sat on a parcel of land that technically belonged to no nation, operating under absolute diplomatic immunity. It was a sovereign fortress that cleared trillions of dollars a day, utterly untouchable by any law enforcement agency on Earth.

Two blocks away, idling in the shadows of a subterranean parking garage, a matte-black Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van sat in total darkness.

Inside the rear cabin, Elias Vance checked the action of his suppressed 9mm. He was dressed in a sleek, non-reflective tactical suit designed to absorb ambient light. His face was pale, the jagged white scar on his cheek standing out in the dim glow of the localized terminal strapped to his wrist.

Beside him, Gideon was a terrifying silhouette of ballistic armor and kinetic intent. The tactical chief favored his right shoulder, the heavy kinetic brace stiffening his movements, but his massive hands assembled a suppressed, short-barreled carbine with terrifying, blind fluency.

"The BIS does not use external contractors," Gideon rumbled, loading a magazine of armor-piercing rounds. "They maintain an internal security force composed entirely of former Swiss Guard and tier-one European operators. They are not zealots like De Molay’s men. They are professionals. They will not panic."

"We aren't going to give them time to panic," Elias said, his eyes locked on the digital blueprints of the BIS tower scrolling across his wrist monitor. The blueprints hadn't been hacked; Elias had bought them an hour ago from a Hashashin data broker for ten million dollars in Bitcoin. "Prometheus is housed in a subterranean vault, cooled by a closed-loop liquid helium system. Air-gapped from the external internet, hardwired directly into the SWIFT core."

"If it is air-gapped, how did it attack Baphomet?" Gideon asked.

"It has a single, heavily fortified outbound routing trunk," Elias explained. "A digital one-way valve. It can reach out to hunt, but nothing can reach back in. The only way to kill it is to stand in the same room and physically shatter the ceramic casing of the quantum core."

Gideon chambered a round. "Then we shatter it."

The heavy rear doors of the Sprinter van swung open. They didn't run across the open plaza. They had spent another twenty million dollars of Templar gold to bribe a senior logistics coordinator for the Swiss municipal utility grid.

They descended through an open manhole cover into the deep, echoing concrete arteries of Basel’s subterranean utility tunnels. They moved in absolute silence, navigating the labyrinth of massive water mains and fiber-optic conduits that ran directly beneath the sovereign footprint of the BIS tower.

Ten minutes later, Elias stopped before a sheer wall of reinforced, lead-lined concrete.

"The foundation," Elias whispered. "The vault is on the other side of this bulkhead."

"Stand back," Gideon commanded.

The tactical chief didn't use explosives. Explosives would trigger the seismic sensors embedded in the bedrock. Instead, he pulled a specialized thermal lance from his heavy webbing. He ignited the lance, and a blinding, pinpoint beam of white-hot plasma hissed into existence in the damp tunnel.

Gideon applied the plasma to the reinforced concrete, moving with agonizing slowness to prevent a thermal spike on the internal sensors. The concrete didn't explode; it melted into a glowing, bubbling pool of molten slag. It took twelve excruciating minutes to carve a perfectly circular, three-foot breach through the foundation.

Gideon kicked the circular plug inward. It landed on the pristine white ceramic floor of the vault with a heavy, echoing thud.

The ambient temperature instantly plummeted. A thick, rolling fog of condensation spilled out of the breach, caused by the absolute zero liquid helium cooling system inside the vault.

Elias crawled through the breach, his 9mm raised, his breath immediately turning to ice crystals in the air. Gideon followed, his massive frame barely squeezing through the hole.

The subterranean vault was a masterpiece of clinical, terrifying power. It was entirely white, illuminated by blinding, shadowless LED panels. In the center of the vast room sat Prometheus.

It was a monolithic, perfectly smooth obelisk of polished white ceramic and graphene, suspended over a pool of liquid helium. It possessed no flashing lights, no spinning fans, no visible interfaces. It was a monument to centralized, infinite fiat.

But it was not unguarded.

The moment Gideon’s boots hit the ceramic floor, the vault’s localized biometric scanners detected the thermal anomaly of their breath.

A heavy steel elevator door on the far side of the vault chimed.

"Contact," Gideon hissed, raising his carbine as the elevator doors slid open.

Four elite BIS security operatives poured into the vault, moving in flawless tactical formation, their suppressed submachine guns already tracking the thermal blooms near the breach.

Gideon didn't wait for them to acquire targets. He opened fire. The deafening, rapid crack-crack-crack of his carbine shattered the pristine silence of the vault. His armor-piercing rounds punched straight through the ballistic shields the operatives carried, dropping the two point men instantly.
