Slik unfurled a large piece of birch bark. There were no words on it. It was just a crude charcoal drawing of a prehistoric rocket ship pointing toward a crescent moon.

"The fundamentals are flawless," Lom whispered in awe, staring at the rocket ship.

"Here is the deal," Slik explained, grinning like a starved hyena. "To bootstrap the network, I am allowing you lucky few to trade me your old, boring Bit-Stones for brand new Slik-Coins. And because we are in the presale phase, one Bit-Stone will buy you exactly one million Slik-Coins!"

Borg’s jaw dropped. The market-cap fallacy seized his brain with the crushing force of a mammoth stepping on a grape.

"One million?!" Borg shrieked. "Bit-Stone is priced at a hundred steaks! If Borg buys a million Slik-Coins, and Slik-Coin reaches the price of Bit-Stone, Borg will have enough steaks to build a meat-mansion on the moon!"

"Borg, stop!" Grug yelled, grabbing Borg by the flamingo cape. "You don't understand market capitalization! Slik just minted ten billion of these useless pink leaves out of thin air! For Slik-Coin to reach the price of Bit-Stone, the total value of the network would have to exceed the atomic mass of the entire valley!"

Borg plugged his ears with his fingers. "MATH IS FUD! FEAR, UNCERTAINTY, AND DIRT! BORG IS BUYING THE NARRATIVE!"

Borg threw his hard-earned Bit-Stones into Slik’s wheelbarrow and grabbed fistfuls of neon-pink leaves. Lom immediately followed suit.

Seeing Slik rake in pristine, fundamentally sound Bit-Stones in exchange for low-effort, copy-pasted garbage triggered a dark, entrepreneurial awakening in the valley. The tribe suddenly realized that creating money was infinitely easier than actually working for it.

The ICO Boom erupted overnight.

By the next morning, Cave Street looked like a confetti factory explosion. Everyone had a wheelbarrow. Everyone was a founder.

Lom abandoned his fish stand to launch "Trout-Chain," promising a decentralized yield protocol backed by the conceptual idea of future fishing expeditions. He raised three hundred Bit-Stones.

Zog’s cousin launched "Safe-Cave," a token that promised absolute security because the code allegedly locked customer funds in a mathematically sealed vault. (It did not; it was a honeypot, and the cousin fled across the river by nightfall).

Even Thok got involved. Thok had found a piece of yellow bark and crudely drawn a picture of the valley’s three-legged goat on it.

"Thok make Goat-Coin," Thok grunted, holding it up. "Goat-Coin have no Litepaper. Goat-Coin do nothing. It is just goat."

"I'LL TAKE FIFTY MILLION!" Borg screamed, hurling Bit-Stones at Thok. "THE COMMUNITY IS SO ENGAGED! IT’S A MEME-COIN SUPER-CYCLE!"

The trading floor became a cacophony of meaningless buzzwords. Cavemen were shouting about "synergistic ledger-tech," "Layer-3 mud rollups," and "algorithmic stable-pebbles." The actual, physical economy of the valley completely halted. Nobody was hunting. Nobody was gathering. They were just sitting in a massive circle, passing brightly colored leaves back and forth, entirely convinced they were all billionaires.

Grug stood on his boulder, watching the madness with a profound sense of doom.

"They are confusing liquidity with wealth, Thok," Grug said, pointing at Borg, who was currently wearing a crown made of Goat-Coins. "Borg thinks he's rich because his Goat-Coins are supposedly worth thousands of Bit-Stones on paper. But if Borg actually tried to sell them all at once..."

Suddenly, a loud, wooden creak echoed across the valley.

Everyone turned.

Slik the broker was quietly, very slowly, pushing a wheelbarrow completely filled with real, hard-capped Bit-Stones toward the dense forest. He was wearing a fake mustache made of squirrel fur.

"Uh, Slik?" Lom asked, clutching his stack of Slik-Coins. "Where are you going with the treasury?"

"I am... migrating the liquidity pool to a more secure, offshore biome," Slik said smoothly, not breaking stride.

"But Slik-Coin just pumped three hundred percent!" Borg cheered. "When are you delivering the Meta-Valley integration?!"

Slik stopped at the edge of the tree line. He looked back at the crowd of retail bag-holders. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the "Dev Wallet"—a massive sack containing fifty percent of the total Slik-Coin supply—and casually tossed it onto the trading floor.

"I am executing a strategic, decentralized exit," Slik announced. "Thanks for the liquidity, plebs."

Slik vanished into the bushes.

The moment Slik’s massive sack of dev-tokens hit the market, the price of Slik-Coin plummeted. It didn't just crash; it mathematically ceased to exist. It dropped 99.999% in a single tick.

Panic swept through the trading floor.

"SELL THE SLIK-COIN!" Borg screamed, rushing to the center of the market. "Borg will take anything! One Slik-Coin for a pebble! For a twig!"

But there were no buyers. Slik had taken all the real money with him. The liquidity pool was completely drained. The neon-pink leaves were instantly revealed to be exactly what they always were: trash.

The contagion spread instantly. Investors realized Trout-Chain had no actual fish, and Safe-Cave was already hacked. The entire Alt-Coin market imploded in a spectacular cascade of red candles.

Within ten minutes, the billionaires of Cave Street were reduced to sitting in a pile of brightly colored, worthless leaves, having traded away all their hard-money Bit-Stones to anonymous grifters.

Borg sat in the mud, weeping softly, clutching his yellow Goat-Coin.

"At least Borg still has the meme community," Borg sniffled, looking at the crude drawing of the three-legged goat.

Thok walked over, gently took a Bit-Stone out of Borg's pouch, and handed him another yellow leaf. "Goat-Coin supply uncapped. Thok just drew another one."

Borg let out a long, hollow groan and collapsed face-first into the dirt.

Grug walked through the carnage, shaking his head. The centralization of the Exchange era had hurt them, but the permissionless freedom of the ICO era had completely ruined them. They needed a middle ground. They needed financial tools that were decentralized, but governed by immutable, trustless smart contracts that couldn't run away into the woods with a fake mustache.

"We don't need new coins, Thok," Grug muttered, looking at the blueprints for a complex system of interconnected pulleys and locked chests. "We need decentralized finance. We need autonomous lending. We need Yield."
