The Count closed his eyes, the memory of Fernand standing at the edge of the Pharaon, drinking his champagne while the federal agents dragged him away, flashing through his mind.
"Send the full dossier to his son, Albert," the Count murmured, turning away from the terminal. "Fernand can survive losing his money. But he cannot survive losing the illusion of his honor."

Chapter 37: The Senate Hearing
The Palais du Luxembourg felt less like a legislative chamber and more like a bespoke, velvet-lined slaughterhouse. The emergency parliamentary hearing of the French Senate Committee on Defense and Finance had been convened with unprecedented speed. The global markets had demanded an immediate audit of the Yanina Ledger.
Count Fernand de Morcerf sat alone at the witness table, surrounded by a phalanx of silent, terrified defense attorneys. The flashes of a hundred press cameras fired in a relentless, strobing barrage, casting harsh shadows across his perfectly manicured face.

Behind him, the gallery was packed to absolute capacity. Institutional investors, defense contractors, and foreign diplomats watched the spectacle with the cold detachment of vultures circling a dying asset. And seated in the second row, his face pale and his jaw clenched in desperate denial, was Fernand’s son, Albert.
"Count de Morcerf," the Committee Chairman began, his voice booming through the heavy acoustic dampening of the chamber. "The documents dumped onto the global servers yesterday morning detail a massive, coordinated short-selling operation running parallel to the assassination of General Ali Pasha. They explicitly name you as the architect of the betrayal. How do you plead?"

Fernand adjusted his microphone, projecting the practiced, unshakeable confidence of a CEO used to dictating terms to the board.
"It is a highly sophisticated deepfake, Mr. Chairman," Fernand stated, his voice a smooth, resonant baritone. "A coordinated short-and-distort campaign executed by an anonymous hedge fund. The blockchain routing hashes in the Yanina Ledger are synthetic. They spoofed the digital signatures to crash my stock and trigger a liquidity cascade. I am not a traitor to the French Republic; I am the victim of a cyber-terrorist attack."

A murmur rippled through the senators. Fernand’s defense was mechanically sound. In an era of AI-generated data and decentralized anonymity, proving the provenance of a decade-old digital file was notoriously difficult. Fernand was betting everything on the margin of doubt.
"Can you provide forensic proof that the hashes were spoofed?" a senator asked.

"My cyber-security teams are currently auditing the server logs," Fernand lied smoothly, sensing the momentum shifting slightly in his favor. "But I remind the committee: the burden of proof lies with the accuser. And the accuser in this case is a ghost. An anonymous algorithm. You cannot convict a man, or liquidate a four-billion-euro company, based on unverified, open-source data drops."
The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the chamber swung open with a resounding, heavy thud.

The cameras pivoted instantly. The ambient hum of the room died.
The Count of Monte Cristo did not enter. He had no need to appear on the tape. Instead, walking down the center aisle with a terrifying, absolute poise, was Haydée.
She wore a stark, tailored white suit, an aggressive contrast to the dark wood and shadows of the Senate floor. She bypassed the press corps and walked directly to the center podium, placing a heavy, brushed-steel briefcase onto the mahogany stand.

Fernand’s breath hitched. He had never seen this woman in his life, but the predatory, frictionless way she moved triggered every survival instinct he possessed.
"Mr. Chairman," Haydée spoke, her voice carrying a cold, aristocratic authority that instantly silenced the chamber. "The accuser is not an algorithm. I am the accuser."
The Chairman frowned, adjusting his reading glasses. "And who are you, Madame? You are not on the witness docket."

"My name is Haydée Pasha," she said softly, but the acoustics of the room carried the name like a shockwave. "I am the daughter and sole surviving heir of General Ali Pasha. And I am the architect of the Yanina Ledger."
Fernand gripped the edge of his table, the wood groaning under the pressure. "This is a theatrical stunt!" he shouted, his curated facade cracking. "She is a paid actor! An operative hired by the short-sellers!"

Haydée ignored him completely. She popped the latches on the steel briefcase. Inside was an archaic, offline decryption terminal and a thick stack of physical, yellowed parchment.
"Digital hashes can be spoofed, Count de Morcerf," Haydée agreed, her dark eyes finally locking onto Fernand with the weight of a decade of suppressed vengeance. "But private keys cannot be faked when they are matched to the physical genesis block."
