Grug closed his eyes. The philosophical purity of "Code is Law" was beautiful in a vacuum, but in reality, it was starving his friends.
Grug slammed the charcoal down onto the leaf.
He didn't erase Zero’s transaction. Erasing was impossible; the blocks were mathematically linked. Instead, Grug drew a completely new branch branching off from the block exactly one minute before Zero started kicking the Smart Contract.
He created an alternate timeline.
Grug walked out of his cave and stood before the despondent crowd. He held up two white leaves.
"Listen to me!" Grug shouted into the freezing wind. "I cannot delete the hack! But I have written a software update! I have created a Hard Fork in the Rock-Chain!"
The crowd murmured in confusion.

"On this leaf in my left hand," Grug explained, holding up the original ledger, "the timeline continues as normal. Zero kicked the machine, Zero took the funds, and Code is Law. I call this Bit-Stone Classic."
"Boo!" Borg yelled, throwing a handful of mud at the left leaf. "Burn the Classic leaf!"
"But," Grug continued, holding up the new leaf in his right hand, "on this leaf, the network universally agrees to pretend the last three days never happened. The hacked funds are returned to a recovery contract, and you all get your money back. I call this... just Bit-Stone."
Lom gasped. "Lom gets his fish stand back?!"
"Only if the network agrees," Grug clarified. "A ledger is only real if the miners expend energy to secure it. Thok! It is up to you and the mining guild. Which timeline will you dedicate your brain-calories to?"
Thok didn't even hesitate. He looked at Lom’s starving children. He looked at the original leaf where the thief won.

"Thok chooses the new leaf," Thok declared, sitting down and immediately closing his eyes to start hashing the new timeline. "Thok mines the bailout."
The crowd erupted into absolute pandemonium. They cheered, they hugged, they danced in the mud. The sheer computing power of the valley’s miners overwhelmingly migrated to the new, bailed-out chain. The new timeline became the dominant reality. Lom had his funds back. Borg was instantly rich again.
But as the celebration raged, a small, heavily armed group of cavemen separated themselves from the crowd.
It was Zog, wearing a tinfoil-like hat made of shiny beetle carapaces, standing next to Zero the hacker.
"You are all cowards!" Zog shrieked, pointing an accusatory spear at Grug. "You abandoned the core ethos! If you can roll back the chain today for Lom, who will you roll it back for tomorrow? The Chief?! You have reinvented fiat money!"

"Zog," Grug sighed. "The community reached consensus. The social layer overruled the code."
"The code does not care about your feelings!" Zog roared. "I reject your fake, bailed-out timeline! Zero won those stones fair and square! I am dedicating my personal hashing power to Bit-Stone Classic!"
Zero the hacker smirked, hefting his massive sack of Classic Bit-Stones. "Thank you, Zog. Have fun on your centralized, censored network, Grug."
Zog and a dozen hardcore maximalists marched off to the other side of the valley to continue building on the original, hacked timeline.
Grug watched them go, a deep knot forming in his stomach. The community was permanently fractured. But the philosophical schism was only the beginning of the nightmare. The economic reality of a Hard Fork was about to hit Cave Street like a meteor.

The next morning, Borg swaggered up to Lom’s fish stand.
"Lom, my good friend!" Borg cheered. "Give Borg the finest tuna! Here is one Bit-Stone!" Borg proudly handed over a cryptographic signature.
Lom squinted at it. "Wait. Is this a Bit-Stone, or a Bit-Stone Classic?"
Borg blinked. "What does Lom mean?"
"When Grug split the timeline," Lom explained, tapping his abacus, "he copied the entire history of the ledger up to the hack. Which means, if Borg had ten Bit-Stones before the hack, Borg now has ten Bit-Stones on the new chain, AND ten Bit-Stone Classics on Zog's old chain!"
Borg’s jaw dropped. He looked at his hands. "Borg's money... cloned itself? Borg has double the money?!"

"Yes, but they are different networks now," Lom groaned. "So which one are you paying me with? Because Lom does not accept Bit-Stone Classic. Zog's network is a ghost town run by a hacker."
"Borg will pay in new Bit-Stone!" Borg said quickly. Then, a deeply degenerate lightbulb went off in Borg's head. "Wait. If Borg has free Bit-Stone Classics... Borg can go across the river and dump them on Zog for more mammoth steaks!"
The valley immediately descended into arbitrage chaos. Traders realized they had been "airdropped" identical balances on a parallel universe ledger. People were frantically running across the river, trying to sell their "Classic" coins to the purists, while the purists tried to dump their "New" coins on the victims.
There were replay attacks—where a caveman would sign a transaction on one timeline, and a thief would copy that exact signature and broadcast it on the other timeline, draining their parallel-universe wallet.

Grug sat on his boulder, holding his head in his hands as Cave Street devolved into a multi-dimensional accounting war.
"It’s a mess, Thok," Grug groaned. "We solved the hack, but we proved that creating a new cryptocurrency is as easy as copying the code and convincing a few people to believe in it."
Thok, who was currently eating a mammoth steak he had bought with a cloned coin he didn't fully understand, nodded slowly. "If creating new math-money is this easy... why everyone just fight over Bit-Stone?"
Grug froze. He looked at Thok.

"Oh no," Grug whispered.
At that exact moment, Slik the real estate broker, who had been hiding in the woods since the Meta-Valley collapse, stepped back onto Cave Street. He was pushing a wheelbarrow entirely filled with brightly colored, newly painted leaves.
"Forget Bit-Stone!" Slik bellowed through a mammoth trunk. "Bit-Stone is old tech! It's too slow! It's too political! Welcome to the future! I am launching an Initial Cave Offering! Buy my new token: Slik-Coin! It solves the scalability trilemma by doing absolutely nothing at all!"
The era of the Alt-Coin had officially begun.

Part 52: The ICO Boom and the Rise of Shitcoins
Slik the real estate broker stood before his wheelbarrow of freshly painted, violently neon leaves, beaming with the unearned confidence of a man about to commit massive securities fraud.
"Gather round, early adopters!" Slik shouted, banging two rocks together. "Bit-Stone is a dinosaur! It’s boomer-math! The transaction speeds are terrible, the fees are too high, and let’s be honest—you all missed the bottom. But today, you have a second chance at generational wealth!"
Borg, who had lost and regained his fortune three times this week, immediately sprinted to the front of the crowd.
"Slik brings new math?" Borg gasped, his eyes wide.

"I bring the third generation of decentralized consensus!" Slik declared, holding up a neon-pink leaf. "I present to you the Initial Cave Offering for Slik-Coin! It is faster, it is sleeker, and most importantly, it is incredibly cheap."
Grug marched down from his boulder, snatched a pink leaf out of Slik’s hand, and squinted at the charcoal markings.
"Slik, you absolute parasite," Grug sneered. "This is just the Bit-Stone source code. You literally just copied my repository, used a piece of charcoal to scratch out the word 'Bit', and wrote 'Slik' over it. You didn't even fix the spelling errors in the comments!"
"It is a hard-forked ideological pivot, Grug," Slik sniffed, adjusting his gourd-hat. "And I have drafted a comprehensive Litepaper to explain the tokenomics."
